Ed was born June 20, 1961, in Bethesda, Maryland, the fourth child and third son of Joseph and Natalie Theis. He was the smallest baby of six but by age 1 was the largest, most active and most mischievous. He was a little delayed in walking but it wasn’t until age 3 that further delays became evident, most notably speech and early learning markers. He was diagnosed with developmental disabilities and was enrolled in his first “special (E)d” program with Easter Seals. Other programs included Meadow Hall Elementary in Rockville, St. Maurice School in Potomac, and Rock Terrace High School in Rockville. His formal education continued until age 22 with home tutoring, most notably with the loving kindness and patience of his beloved Mrs. Greenspan.
Ed loved studying pictures in the many books family members gave him through the years. He especially enjoyed Civil War pictures, tall ships, trains, and cars. His favorite place to visit was Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. Ed also loved to eat and never lost a chance to order “hamburger, French fries and Coke” whenever he went to a restaurant.
In 1992 Ed moved to a group home in Laurel and began attending New Horizons Supported Services Day Program (formerly Vocational Services, Inc.). He then moved to a group home in Beltsville with ResCare Community Living. He enjoyed various activities and work tasks. He especially enjoyed outings and parties. He loved music, dancing, being with other people, and especially celebrating holidays with his family. He also enjoyed going to church with his housemates.
Ed will be greatly missed by all the members of his family and all the staff persons who worked with him so diligently and lovingly day in and day out and became another family for him.
