
Joseph A. Smith (age 106)
Joseph A. Smith (Joe) peacefully passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019, at his home in Silver Spring, Maryland. He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Nancy, his grandson, Dan, granddaughter, Kelly, great-granddaughter, Marayna, great-grandson, Pepi, and a multitude of extended family members and friends. Joe is predeceased by his wife, Pearl, and his son, Larry.
Joe was born on November 14, 1912, in Washington, DC. He graduated from McKinley Tech High School in 1931. This was a time during the Depression. After high school graduation, Joe managed to find employment with R.P. Andrews Paper Company Warehouse in Southeast DC. He started as a helper and progressed to filling orders and eventually to the “Paper Cutting” operation. He wanted an accounting degree so he enrolled at Benjamin Franklin University for night classes. He received a Master of Commercial Science Degree from Benjamin Franklin University in 1935. Joe started working as a junior accountant at the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) in 1936. He retired from PEPCO as Assistant Comptroller in 1977 after 42 years of service.
Joe was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Silver Spring from 1979 to 1984 and then Wheaton when the two clubs merged in 2006. He remained an active member of the Kiwanis Club until his death and received numerous awards from the Kiwanis Foundation.
Joe married Pearl Kilpatrick in 1941 and their son , Larry, was born in 1946. They moved to Silver Spring in 1950 where they had a house built. Their son, Larry, passed away in 2000. Pearl and Joe moved from their house of 51 years to a retirement community in Silver Spring, Maryland.
Pearl passed away in 2004. Joe dearly missed his Pearl.
A memorial service will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church at 9100 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20910, on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke Lutheran Church at the above address.
