
EDMUND SMIGOCKI
Edmund Smigocki of Kensington, Maryland passed away peacefully at home on August 2 after a long illness. He is survived by his wife of almost 63 years, Joan, his daughters Susan and Jane, and son David. He enjoyed his 10 grandchildren and got to watch them all grow into young adults. He was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania and came to the Washington, DC area after high school. After an apprenticeship at the Naval Ordnance Laboratory, he married his high school sweetheart and started his career at Goddard Space Flight Center as an Engineering Technician where he worked until he was 57. He got to work on the Hubble Telescope and multiple projects where precise machine work was required. When he officially retired, he began working for Swales Company and set up their machine shop. He enjoyed his new position for almost 10 years. He was always the go-to guy for technical questions and science projects. At home, his expertise extended to fixing cars, air conditioners, plumbing, and anything else mechanical. He was known within the family for his impressive workshop that he built over the course of 50+ years. He was a talented woodworker and inspired his son’s technical interests. He was always available to help neighbors and extended family members with their projects. He was an avid fisherman and hunter who enjoyed a campfire and the woods. Other interests included building and flying radio controlled airplanes and classical music. He put his family first and was a good father and husband.
Friends and family are invited to gather at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd, West, Silver Spring, MD (Valet Parking) on Monday, August 6 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, where funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 7 at 11 am. Burial will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
