MAUD LEE WILSON SHIREY (Age 88)

On Monday, May 3, 2010, MAUD W. SHIREY of Silver Spring, MD. Born and raised in Cumberland, MD, she received a bachelor”s degree in English Literature from Western Maryland College in Westminster. Following graduation she worked in New York City as a radio engineer for Voice of America and the Armed Forces radio until the end of the war. In addition to raising and caring for her family, she served on the founding boards of Grace Episcopal Day School and Grace Episcopal Church”s Pennyworth Shop. She was a faithful worker at the Shop for 40 years, as well as a Sunday school teacher.

Maud was the beloved wife of the late Orville C. Shirey; mother of Michael C. (Grace), Catherine S. (Steve) Luette and the late O. Wilson (Susan) Shirey; grandmother of David M., Gerrod D. (Shannon) Shirey, Jennifer Shirey (Bennett) Adelman, Stephanie L. and Christopher J. Luette; and great-grandmother of Wilson N. Shirey. Memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 12621 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring on Tuesday, May 11, at 2 PM. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 2020 East-West Hwy., Silver Spring, MD 20910 or to Japanese American Veterans Association, noted for the Major and Mrs. Orville C. Shirey Scholarship Fund and sent to Earl Takeguchi, Treasurer JAVA, 7201 White House Dr., Springfield, VA 22153.
