March 5 2017: SHERMAN, Nancy M.

NANCY M. SHERMAN

On Monday, February 13, 2017, of Washington, DC, aged 91 years, after a brief decline. She is survived by half-brother, Bruce Bush (Judith Johnston) of Highland Park, NJ and half-sister, Janet Bush Epstein (Dannie Epstein) of Nashville, TN; niece, Ruthie Epstein of Brooklyn, NY; and nephew, Johnny Epstein of Nashville, TN. Preceded in death by her beloved husband of 59 years, Jerome G. Sherman, and her parents, David Bush and Esther Brimblecom Bush Briscoe of Chicago, IL.

An avid reader with encyclopedic knowledge of baseball rules and statistics, Nancy was chosen in her teens for the popular Chicago radio show “The Quiz Kids.” She recalled, “Earning US Savings Bonds that later paid for my last year in law school.” Graduating in 1945 from the College and in 1948 from the Law School of the University of Chicago, Nancy worked in the Appellate Division of the National Labor Relations Board. She became an Administrative Law Judge with the agency at a time when very few women had attained that post. She retired in 2002 after 44 years on the bench. Nancy’s unfailingly sweet temperament clothed a gently ironic wit. Her many friends enjoyed hearing her quietly singing romantic ballads, complete with lyrics to every verse.

Funeral arrangements by Collins Funeral Home, Silver Spring MD, were followed by a private ceremony at King David Memorial Gardens, Falls Church, VA. Friends may honor her life through support of an education institution or an organization supporting social justice and freedom of opinion.
The family wishes to thank Nancy’s faithful friends, especially Phyllis and Scott Badesch, and the staffs of the Residences at Thomas Circle and Holy Cross Hospital. Friends can honor her life with a donation to the Woman’s National Democratic Club or to an educational institution.
