MARGARET BRAITMAYER WEST ROOT “Maggie” (Age 95)
Passed away quietly on June 24, 2017. Maggi was a lifelong resident of the Washington, DC area. She graduated from Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and attended Stephens College in Missouri and George Washington University. During WWII, she worked for the Canadian government office in DC and married her love, Robert W. Root, USNR. A perennial volunteer and patron, she provided support and service to many organizations in the DC area: Docent, Arlington House (National Park Service); Aide, Washington National Cathedral; Guide, Brookside Gardens; renewal and expansion of Olney Theatre Center; expansion of Hospice Caring, Inc; and her churches (The Chevy Chase Presbyterian Church and Unity Christ Church.) Her active work in organizations such as Welcome to Washington and PEO, plus other humanitarian efforts around the world, were vehicles to show her love for all humankind.
Robert W. Root and her son-in-law Charles Muir preceded Maggi in death. She is survived by her children, Nancy Root Muir and Robert W. Root, Jr. (Brenda); granddaughters Joy Muir (Edward) Mollaneda and Jennelle Root (Alex) Martell, grandsons Michael Muir and David (Jaclyn) Muir, and six great grandchildren. Services celebrating Maggi’s life will be held at Olney Theatre Center on August 26, 2017 at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Maggi Root, to Hospice Caring, Inc., in Gaithersburg, MD.
