John A. Roeder, Jr., DVM  

On August 3, 2018 Dr. John Adam Roeder, Jr. of Silver Spring, MD, died at home, following a brief illness. Born December 16, 1923 in Baltimore County, MD to John A. Roeder, Sr. and Bessye Brown Roeder, he received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1956 from the University of Georgia. As a veterinarian, he successfully owned and operated Roeder Animal Hospital in Silver Spring, MD for 30 years, retiring in 1988. Dr. Roeder served in the Army during World War II from 1943-1946. He was a member of the Wheaton-Kensington Rotary, and an officer on their board for several terms, including as President. He took up snow skiing in his 50’s and competed in both NASTAR and Senior Olympics downhill events, winning the ’99, ’00 and ’01 Slalom and Giant Slalom Sr Olympics in the 75-79 age group. John volunteered with the Courtesy Patrol at Ski Roundtop, Lewisberry, PA from 1987-1995. John was an avid golfer, could be frequently found playing rounds at Leisure World, scored two holes in one, and served on several committees for the club. John and Betty were members of the Leisure World Bowling league where he rolled two turkeys this past June. Dr. Roeder leaves behind his wife of 67 years, Mary H. “Betty,” their children, Nan R Romano, John H (Cindy), Gary J (Shani), Gail R Jones (Dale), Scott A (Don Eslin), Lisa R Vogan (Kelly), his younger siblings, Donald (Kathleen) and Barbara (Linda), 21 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Lynn R. Ritterpusch (John) and one grandchild, Joseph B. Harrell. The family will receive friends and relatives at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd W, Silver Spring, MD (valet parking) on Monday, August 6 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.  A Catholic mass of burial is scheduled for Tuesday, August 7 at 11 a.m. at Our Lady of Grace, 15663 Norbeck Blvd., followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery.  Flowers are welcome, and memorial contributions may be made to KEEN of Greater DC, www.keengreaterdc.org.
