October 30 2019: OLIVERIO, Vincent T.

VINCENT THOMAS OLIVERIO

Vincent Thomas Oliverio, age 90, of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, formerly of Bethany Beach, Delaware and Silver Spring, Maryland, passed peacefully in the home of his son and daughter-in-law on October 29, 2019.  Born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1928, Vince received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in organic chemistry from Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio.  He was forever grateful for this move to southern Ohio for it was there that he fell in love with his spirited and vivacious soulmate and life-long sweetheart, Kathleen Reilly Moore, creating a magical and love-filled marriage of 62 years, which produced 11 children, 42 grandchildren and 32 great-grandchildren, with two more expected imminently.  Known to his professional colleagues as the quintessential “lab-rat”, Vince earned his Ph.D. in oncology from the University of Florida in 1955 and served as a U.S. public health fellow in cancer research.  From 1955-1959 he was a project associate in oncology at the McArdle Memorial Laboratory at the University of Wisconsin.  In 1959, he joined the National Cancer Institute at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland where he earned a reputation as an internationally renowned and innovative researcher and administrator in the field of experimental and developmental therapeutics in the Division of Cancer Research until his retirement in 1997.

A quiet, contemplative man who served as an inspirational role model to all who knew him, Vince never failed to astonish family and friends with his many gifts, including his culinary, vocal and musical talents.  His greatest gift, however, was the example he set through his gentle and loving demeanor and his unwavering support of and devotion to family and the Roman Catholic faith.

Vince is predeceased by his beloved wife, Kathleen, and his adoring sister Leona Stotter.  He is survived by his children John (Jennifer), Catherine Huff (Kurt), Mary (Steve), Margaret Konieczka (Quinn), Nancy Farinacci (Dino), Matthew (Kathleen), Patricia Gallorini, Martin (Missy), Joseph (Jeanette), James (Antionette), Monica Stewart (Brent) and his brother Anthony.
