
John Joseph “Joe” O’Donnell, Jr., a former vice president with the American Mining Congress (now the National Mining Association) died on March 8, 2017. He was 90 years old. O’Donnell was a native Washingtonian. He attended St. John’s College High School in Washington, D.C., before enlisting in the Navy during World War II. After the War, he attended the Catholic University of America, graduating cum laude in 1952. Prior to his work with the American Mining Congress, O’Donnell was the vice president for business affairs at the National Catholic Education Association. During his 20 year employment there, he was made a Knight of St. Gregory the Great by Pope Paul VI in recognition of his work in Catholic education. Following his retirement from the American Mining Congress in 1987, O’Donnell returned to school and earned a master’s degree in religious studies at the Graduate School of Christendom College. He then taught religion at The Heights School in Potomac, Md., from 1989 to 1998. O’Donnell is survived by Joanne O’Donnell, his wife of 66 years, his brother Richard P. O’Donnell of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and by seven of his eight children: Anne Donnally of Silver Spring, Md.; James O’Donnell of Brunswick, Md.; Amy O’Donnell of Silver Spring, Md.; Mary Dellatorre (Dan) of Bethesda, Md.; Paul O’Donnell (Robin) of Montgomery Village, Md.; Mark O’Donnell of Chestnut Hill, Mass.; and Matthew O’Donnell (Julie) of Oak Hill, Va. Another son, Rev. Stephen J. O’Donnell, died in 2007 in an automobile accident, while serving as a Catholic priest in the Lismore Diocese in Australia. There are also 13 surviving grandchildren and one great granddaughter in his family.
A funeral Mass will be offered at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, March 13, at Our Lady of Grace Church, 15661 Norbeck Blvd., Silver Spring, Md. There will be a viewing in the church at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Heights School, 10400 Seven Locks Road, Potomac, MD 20854 and/or to Christendom College, 134 Christendom Drive, Front Royal,VA 22630.
