CHARLES LEEHY MURPHY (Age 96)
On Tuesday, April 4, 2017, Charles L. Murphy of Bethesda, MD died in his sleep of natural causes. He was a loving husband for 62 years to Margaret Estelle Murphy (deceased); father to their seven children, grandfather to 13, great-grandfather to 10. He is survived by his children, Mary Ellen MacCarthy of Arlington, VA, Timothy P. Murphy (Nancy) of Columbia, SC, Ann C. Macuch (Bill) of Silver Spring, MD, John P. Murphy of Cary, NC, William P. Murphy (Mary-Claire) of Silver Spring, MD, Stephen P. Murphy (Margaret Ann) of Memphis, TN, Robert P. Murphy (Teresa) of Raleigh, NC. He was the son of Francis J. and Marie Murphy of Fargo, ND and the youngest in a family of seven children, all of whom have predeceased him.
Charles L. Murphy was born in Fargo, ND. He received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of California – Berkeley in 1944 and passed the North Dakota Bar in 1953. He was elected to the North Dakota State Senate in 1958 and ran for the Office of Attorney General of North Dakota in the 1960 national election. The Murphy’s moved to Washington, DC in 1961 after an appointment by President Kennedy to the FDIC as an assistant to the General Counsel.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 12319 New Hampshire Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20904 on Saturday, April 22, 2017 at 11 a.m. Friends are invited to gather at the church at 10 a.m., where his family will greet them. Inurnment Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, anyone interested in donating to a cause on his behalf is encouraged to contribute to the good works of So Others Might Eat (SOME), where he volunteered for years during the founding years under the stewardship of Father Horace McKenna, S.J.
