Brother HILARY METTES, S.T. (Age 93)
A Missionary Servant of the Most Holy Trinity, died on Saturday, March 4, 2017. He was in residence at Father Judge Missionary Cenacle, Adelphi, MD. He was born in Missouri in 1923. Prior to entering his Religious Order, he lived and worked in Kansas City, employed by Dun & Bradstreet, Inc. His entrance into the Novitiate at Holy Trinity Alabama was in 1950. He was assigned to his Order’s seminary in Silver Spring in 1953 and has since resided in the Washington area. Perpetual Vows were pronounced in 1956. Early assignments were in communications and fundraising. He served 33 years in the headquarters of the Missionary Servants, which included 26 years as Secretary General. For several years, he taught catechetics in three Silver Spring parishes. Brother Hilary served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Metropolitan Washington Ear, Inc., a radio reading service for the blind. He served as Director of Communications of the former Mission Secretariat, under the direction of the late Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. He is a past board member of the Thomas More Society of America, and was a member of the Catholic Historical Society of Washington. He served for many years as a volunteer at So Others Might Eat (S.O.M.E.), a soup kitchen in Washington, DC. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call at Father Judge Missionary Cenacle, 1733 Metzerott Road, Adelphi, MD, Wednesday, March 8, from 4 to 8 p.m., with prayer service at 7 p.m., where Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Thursday, March 9, 2017 at 11 a.m. Interment St. Joseph Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell, AL. Contributions in Brother Hilary’s memory may be made to Missionary Servants of the Most Holy Trinity.
