Eleonora M. Meier (age 89), of Bethesda, MD and Portsmouth, RI, passed away peacefully at home on January 8, 2020, She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 51 years Louis L. Meier, Jr. and her parents the Count and Countess Ascanio and Renata Tomacelli-Filomarino. Eleonora was the loving mother of Renee (Paul Frediani) Meier of New York, NY, Sharon (Warren) Clark of Ridgewood, NJ, Catherine Meier of Rome, Italy, and Marina (Douglas) Taylor of Bethesda, MD, devoted grandmother of Andrew, Courtney, Justin, Francesco, Ludovico, and Eleanor and great-grandmother of William and Louis. She grew up in Naples, Italy, and is survived by her loving siblings, Paola Ruggiero, Marina Ghelardi, and Giustiano Tomacelli-Filomarino, all of Milan, Italy. Eleonora was educated at the Sacred Heart in Dublin, Ireland, and later met her husband Louis while working at NATO in Naples. She moved to the United States in 1956 as the wife of a Naval Officer, spending the majority of her years in Washington, DC. She was an avid tennis player and a longtime member of the Chevy Chase Club. Eleonora and her late husband loved to travel, particularly to spend time with her family in Italy and winters in Great Camanoe, British Virgin Islands. She spent her summers in Portsmouth, RI where she enjoyed her many friends and was a member of Bailey’s Beach Club and the Clambake Club.
Eleonora will be remembered at a private Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of the Little Flower in Bethesda, MD on Monday, January 13, 2020 and interred at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to ocular melanoma research. Donations can be sent to Memorial Sloan Kettering Office of Development, P.O.
