Dolores Carcelli McCartney
Dolores Carcelli McCartney, Attorney at Law and long- time resident of Washington, D.C., died Thursday, January 3, 2019 at the age of 88. After graduating from Sharon Senior High School (Sharon, PA) in 1948 and then The University of Dayton in 1952, Mrs. McCartney was hired by the federal government as an analyst in national security. Beginning in 1959, Mrs. McCartney worked as a legislative assistant for United State Senator John Sherman Cooper of Kentucky, focusing on water, land and mining legislation. Fluent in Spanish, French and Italian, it was not uncommon for her to attend meetings in the Senate where she served as an interpreter. With Senator Cooper’s encouragement, she enrolled in American University’s Washington School of Law, graduating in January, 1965. She was then admitted to the D.C. Bar.
Upon graduation she was hired at the Washington D.C. law office of Nixon, Mudge, Rose, Gunther and Alexander. As a new hire she worked on the team that represented Listerine in their (unsuccessful) fight to claim the mouthwash killed the germs that caused colds. From the early 1970’s until eleven years ago Mrs. McCartney served as a criminal defense attorney – public defender in Washington, D.C.
Mrs. McCartney, was the beloved daughter of Joseph Carcelli and Cecilia Bronzo Carcelli of Sharon, Pennsylvania, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her former husband Gerald L. McCartney. She is survived by two daughters, Cecilia McCartney Hofmann of York, PA and Grace McCartney Naji of Boardman, Ohio, a son in law, Douglas J. Hofmann, M.D. of York, PA, four grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A Celebration of Life Mass for Mrs. McCartney will be held, Saturday, February 2, 2019 at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, 309 S. George St., York, PA 17401. In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations in her memory be made to St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church, 10103 Georgia Avenue, Silver Springs, Md. 20902. The clergy and members of this church greatly enhanced the quality of her life for the last ten years, during which time she was unable to walk. The family is also grateful to the caring staff of The Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Silver Springs, Maryland, who cared for their mother and her family with dedication and love.
