LAURIE SUE KASLOVE (Age 65)

Dearest wife, mother, sister, grandmother, and friend, died on Saturday, October 7, 2017, after a hard-fought battle with leukemia. Laurie was a clinical psychologist in private practice for most of her professional life. In her role as a therapist, she felt privileged to be entrusted with her clients’ most intimate sorrows and joys. She was deeply curious about the human mind and applied her intellect and empathy to improving the lives of her clients. In recent years, she was a Clinical Instructor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Science at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Science. There she co-taught a course intended to humanize the practice of medicine, a pursuit that she found both personally and professionally significant. Laurie was a graduate of Simmons College in Boston and held masters’ degrees from American University in psychology and the University of Maryland in social work. Laurie’s greatest passion was her family and their well-being. Her three daughters, Jocelyn, Megan and Hannah, stand as her proudest achievement in life, and she loved them so individually and fully that they each believed themselves to be her “favorite”. Megan and Hannah Moore were well prepared by their mother to pursue their passions and enrich the lives of others. Jocelyn Sweet (Moore), who preceded Laurie in death in 2014, received the same good mothering with the same result. Her influence on David Moore, her husband of nearly forty years, was the similar and served to contradict his deeply held view that we are who we are. Laurie was a logophile and lover of languages, who found immense enjoyment in reading, a good scrabble victory, and puzzle solving. She instilled a love of nature and travel in her three children, and relished exploring new places and building memories with her family. In the Moore-Kaslove household, Laurie is credited with giving meaning to celebrations and the passing of seasons with her attention to detail and love of family gatherings. Laurie managed to make every occasion feel special, no matter how big or small.

She is survived by the aforementioned members of her immediate family, as well as by Megan’s husband, Isaac Hammond-Paul; grandson, Levi, whose arrival this past spring motivated Laurie to fight on, and by Hannah’s fiancée, Alex Hansen. Laurie is also survived by Jocelyn’s husband, Brian Sweet; and siblings, Debra Browne, Judith Kaslove and Jonathan Kaslove. Laurie will be missed by all who loved her, but she will live on in the impulse to do good and care for others. A funeral service will take place on October 13, 2017 at 1 p.m., in the Chapel of Norbeck Memorial Park, 16225 Batchellors Forest Road in Olney, Maryland. Following the ceremony, the family will host a reception. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that donations in memory of Laurie be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center.
