MARY JANE JACKSON

Mary Jane Jackson, 76, a retired school principal in Montgomery County died Wednesday, August 27, 2014 at her home in Silver Spring, MD, where she had lived for 30 years. She had worked at Stephen Knolls School in Wheaton, MD for 16 years, retiring as principal in 1998.

Mrs. Jackson who specialized in teaching brain damaged children was the first woman president of the Wheaton-Kensington Rotary Club in 2001 and was a U.S. Fulbright lecturer on childhood retardation in Russia in 2002. She received a doctorate degree in education at George Washington University in 1977.

A lifelong Catholic, Mrs. Jackson served as President of the Board of Education of the Archdiocese of Washington in 1985.

She is survived by her husband, Robert, a retired reporter for the Los Angeles Times; three daughters, Julia Somers, Patricia Snowden and Margaret Tyler and two grandchildren, Kelsey and Drew Tyler.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. John Evangelist Church in Silver Spring, Maryland. Graveside services immediately following at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Visitation to be held the day before on Monday, September 1, 2014 at Collins Funeral Home in Silver Spring, MD from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.
