GARRITTY LALA H.

Lala Huebner Garritty died Sunday, August 18, 2013. She was 80 years old. She was born Lala Huebner in Donora, Pennsylvania on July 18, 1933 and grew up in Silver Spring, Maryland. The Huebner family moved in next door to the Garrittys in 1941. Lala was a conscientious student and worked as a year book editor at Takoma Junior High School and Montgomery Blair High School, where she was a cheerleader as well. She entered the University of Maryland in the fall of 1951, enrolling in the college’s initial program for early childhood education, graduating in 1955. She was a principal speaker at its 50th anniversary in 2011. She earned her Master’s Degree in Human Development in 1962. As an undergraduate, she served on the interfraternity council and was president of her sorority, Alpha Gamma Delta. She began her teaching career at McDonald Knolls Elementary in Montgomery County. In 1963 she opened her own licensed pre-school for ten students in her home. She operated it for 25 years. She was a very active member of Oak Chapel United Methodist Church for 45 years. One of the church’s active women’s circleS is named in her honor. She is survived by her husband, Jim Garritty of Silver Spring, Maryland; her son, Dr. Chip Garritty and grand-daughter, Kylie both of Bryant, Arkansas; her brother, Adrien Huebner of Little Orleans, Maryland and many nieces and nephews. Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard, West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Wednesday, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Service will be celebrated at Oak Chapel United Methodist Church, 14500 Layhill Road, Silver Spring, MD, 20906 on Thursday, August 22, at 11 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
