On Thursday, August 4, 2011. Of Silver Spring, MD. Joan Boicourt was born in Floral Park NY. Beloved wife of the late Edward M. Boicourt for 49 years; loving mother of Kathleen Goldstein, Edward Boicourt Jr., Gerard Boicourt, James Boicourt, and Irene Curry. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and her sister, Patricia Cotignola. Joan was a respected Artist and Art Teacher in the community, worked in the Washington Art Institute under Alexander Giampietro, high school Art Teacher in the 1970’s and 80’s, longtime leader and member of the Women’s Art Exchange in Montgomery County, MD and Docent at Glenview Mansion in Rockville, MD. OLIVER NORRIS PHILIP (Age 84)
On Monday, August 1, 2011, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of Maria Ifill Philip. The former Commissioner of Police for the Commonwealth of Dominica, he was the devoted father of Veda, Joyce, David, Samuel, Paul, Peter, Barbara, and Ray. Mr. Philip was predeceased by daughter, Fern and son, Daniel. He leaves 21 grandchildren. Also mourning his loss are his brother, Alton and his brothers and sisters-in-law, Oliver, Earle, Bert, Maria and Gwen Ifill. FERNANDO LUIS LEON (Age 95)
Peacefully on Monday, August 1, 2011, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of 66 years to Argelia Rivera Leon; youngest and last child of Francisca Rodriguez and Vicente Leon; devoted father of Fernandito Leon and Sonia Reig; father-in-law of Jose Reig; proud uncle of Elba, Chente, Tito, Gloria Eneida and Cuto of Puerto Rico. Fernando was born June 11, 1916 in Jayuya, Puerto Rico which he was very proud of as well as being an American citizen. He served in World War II and worked as a Federal employee for 30 years in personnel at the Civil Service Commission, Fort Myers, The Smithsonian and ended his career in federal service in 1973 at the National Institutes of Health. ARLYN E. WELTY-COLLINS
Arlyn E. Welty-Collins of Silver Spring, Maryland on August 1, 2011, after a 3 1/2 year battle with cancer. Beloved wife of John M. Welty for 44 years who preceded her in death, and David M. Collins for the past five years, adored mother of Eric, Steven and Carolyn and grandmother of Kyle, Caitlyn and Ben. Also survived by sisters Lavonne and June and brother Dallas. Since her diagnosis, she never stopped traveling, cooking, gardening, playing bridge, and creating memories with loving family, especially her grandchildren. “Lyn” was a 1955 graduate of Northwestern School of Nursing in Minneapolis and worked as a Registered Nurse most of her adult life. Lyn loved to travel and had the opportunity to accompany John Welty as a Foreign Service wife to Washington D.C., Kabul, Ankara, and Taipei. In her retirement years, Lyn spent many days volunteering at the St. Luke Caring Ministry, both as a parish nurse and in the finance office. A Memorial Service will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church, 9100 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, MD 20910 on Friday, August 5, at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Lyn’s memory to the Jack and Lyn Welty Music Ministry Memorial at St. Luke Lutheran Church.
ANNE JOSEPH SOMA
Died peacefully at her home on Monday, August 1, surrounded by those she loved and who loved her. She fought a long battle with cancer, using her time to strengthen her ties to her family, to her friends, and to her God. She was born May 28, 1931, in Kingston, PA, the daughter of Bea and Sam Joseph.
Anne was married for 55 years to Edward Soma, MD, who survives her. Mother of Theresa Soma, Edward Soma, Jr., Nancy Polansky, Diane Dowling and John Soma. She is also survived by her twelve grandchildren. A devout and active member of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, Anne was one of the founding members of the Church, and served for 25 years as treasurer, and as a member of the Parish council. In recognition of her service to the Faith, Anne was invested in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulcher of Jerusalem in 2000, and was promoted to the rank of Lady Commander in 2005. In 2009, she was made a Dame of the Pontifical Order of St. Gregory the Great, one of the highest honors available to laymen in the Catholic Church.
A public visitation will be held on Thursday, August 4, from 4 to 8 p.m. at Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Catholic Church, 7142 Alaska Ave. NW, Washington, DC. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday, August 5, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Lebanon. Interment will be a private ceremony at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Anne’s memory to either the building fund of Our Lady of Lebanon Maronite Church, or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital , P.O. Box 1000, Memphis, TN 38148.
