HENRIKSEN, Elizabeth Ann “Betty”

Elizabeth Ann Henriksen (Betty)
May 6, 1943 – June 30, 2019

Betty, age 76, was a native New Yorker, born in Manhattan and growing up in Richmond Hill in Queens and Malverne on Long Island. She was the only child of her beloved parents, the late Anna K. and John G. Siemers.

Betty graduated from Richmond Hill High School in 1961 and Wagner College, Staten Island, NY in 1965. After graduation she married her first husband, Allen Ferreira, and they relocated to Rockville, MD. This marriage ended in divorce. In 1982 she married her beloved husband, George Henriksen, who preceded her in death in 1998. She worked as an accountant at NIH when she first came to Maryland, and in 1972 moved to the Military Sealift Command (MSC), Department of the Navy. She earned her CPA Certificate in 1976 and worked for MSC, retiring in 2006 as a Supervisory Systems Accountant. She received many awards during her career including the Superior Civilian Service Award.

Betty joined St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in 1965 and was a member there at the time of her death. She served as Treasurer and Council Secretary twice, Council President, and head of the Altar Committee. She also sang in the Choir, played in the Chime Choir, participated in the Shawl Ministry and Worship and Music and Finance Committees. After her retirement she volunteered in the church office and helped out where needed. She also served on the Board of the Auxiliary at the Village at Rockville and volunteered for the Montgomery County Literacy Council as a Tutor and Tutor Contact. Betty often threatened to “go back to work to rest.” She enjoyed attending plays, reading, crocheting and other needle work, making jewelry and, mostly, spending time with friends. She traveled to interesting places, but also enjoyed being home and always kept busy.

She is survived by Deborah Ann Loso, a sister-in-law from her first marriage, and Debbie’s three sons and families, as well as her step family from her second marriage daughters: Karen Henriksen (partner Jan Sanders); Kris Hinkeldey (Howard); Kathy Wright (Jerry); and Kay Hunter (Dave). She also has four granddaughters: Lauren Tribble (Keith); Kelly Ginter (Jonathan); Samantha Hunter; and Jaime Hunter and three great-grandchildren: Jeremy and Adelyn Tribble and Avery Ginter.

Relatives and friends may call at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 4629 Aspen Hill Road, Rockville, MD, 20953, on Sunday, July 7, 2019 from 1:30 to 2 p.m., where a Memorial Service will be held at 2 p.m. Inurnment at Arlington National Cemetery Columbarium at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church Memorial Fund, 4629 Aspen Hill Road, Rockville MD, 20853 or to the Auxiliary of the Village at Rockville 9701 Veirs Drive, Rockville MD 20850.
