CAMERON, Don B.

Passed away from pneumonia on July 7, 2019 at the age of 89. He was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1929. He is survived by his wife Nancie (nee Brownley) Cameron from Baltimore Maryland, daughters Mimi of Silver Spring MD, Nancy of Shoreview, MN, Carol of Concord, NH, Don of Golden, CO and three grandchildren, all of whom have Cameron as a middle name. He grew up in Detroit, left to UCLA, and joined the Navy ROTC program and was on active duty during the Korean War. He met his first wife Miriam while in the Navy, and after intelligence work for NSA pursued a medical degree through George Washington University Medical School. He opened a private Internal Medicine practice in Prince Georges County, and treated thousands of local residents. A strong advocate for education, he gave generously to many causes, most recently for schools on the eastern shore of MD. A traveler, he led a memorable trip during the OPEC oil embargo in an RV across the country, sharing his love of the outdoors, but sadly failed in getting his kids to enjoy his love of fishing. After a divorce, he met and married Nancie while attending Silver Spring United Presbyterian Church. They retired together and had many trips in the Caribbean, and other parts of the world. He have also traveled with his children to Vietnam, France, and China. He loved to read, especially American history around the Civil War, and biographies. He loved classical music, especially the Russian composers, and passed away listening to Tchaikovsky. He will be buried in the family plot in White Pigeon, Michigan. In lieu of flowers Don would encourage you to make a memorial gift to one of your favorite charities.

(Lindsey), Katie (Jacob) and Kelly Donnellan and Kelly, Ryan and Kevin McCarthy;  great-grandmother of Connor and Logan Donnellan and Caralyn Lavender;  sister of the late Virginia Magnolia. NELLY LUZ LOAYZA

Nelly Luz Loayza, born in Lima, Peru on September 19, 1951, a native resident of Silver Spring, MD, passed away on June 29, 2019 at 8:02 p.m. Nelly was placed into hospice at the home of her daughter in Frederick, Maryland when she succumbed to a long-term battle against cancer. Nelly was constantly surrounded by her devoted immediate family. During her final week, her children, family and friends were continuously found by her bedside.

The daughter of the late Eustaquio and Maria Angelica Mejia, beloved mother of Addison Loayza, Nelly Gutierrez, Lucero Navarro, and Erika Ferguson, and loving grandmother of 14 grandchildren, to include Bryan, Marina, AJ (Tomas), Kevin, Mateo, Mykaela, Angelina, Nikolai, Giselle, Genesis, Kataleya, Abigail, Lucas, and Gianna.

Relatives and friends may call Collins Funeral Home located at 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, where a vigil will be held on Sunday, July 07, 2019, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM, valet parking will be available. SMITH, Joseph A.

Joseph A. Smith (age 106)

Joseph A. Smith (Joe) peacefully passed away Sunday, July 7, 2019, at his home in Silver Spring, Maryland.  He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Nancy, his grandson, Dan, granddaughter, Kelly, great-granddaughter, Marayna, great-grandson, Pepi, and a multitude of extended family members and friends.  Joe is predeceased by his wife, Pearl, and his son, Larry.

Joe was born on November 14, 1912, in Washington, DC.  He graduated from McKinley Tech High School in 1931.  This was a time during the Depression.  After high school graduation, Joe managed to find employment with R.P. Andrews Paper Company Warehouse in Southeast DC.  He started as a helper and progressed to filling orders and eventually to the “Paper Cutting” operation.  He wanted an accounting degree so he enrolled at Benjamin Franklin University for night classes.  He received a Master of Commercial Science Degree from Benjamin Franklin University in 1935. Joe started working as a junior accountant at the Potomac Electric Power Company (PEPCO) in 1936.  He retired from PEPCO as Assistant Comptroller in 1977 after 42 years of service.

Joe was an active member of the Kiwanis Club of Silver Spring from 1979 to 1984 and then Wheaton when the two clubs merged in 2006.  He remained an active member of the Kiwanis Club until his death and received numerous awards from the Kiwanis Foundation.

Joe married Pearl Kilpatrick in 1941 and their son ,  Larry, was born  in 1946.  They moved to Silver Spring in 1950 where they had a house built.  Their son, Larry, passed away in 2000.  Pearl and Joe moved from their house of 51 years to a retirement community in Silver Spring, Maryland.

Pearl passed away in 2004.  Joe dearly missed his Pearl.

A memorial service will be held at St. Luke Lutheran Church at 9100 Colesville Road, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20910, on Saturday, July 20, 2019 at 11:00 a.m.  Memorial contributions may be made to St. Luke Lutheran Church at the above address.

KENDRA JO VINTON (Age 63)

On Thursday, July 4, 2019, of Laurel, MD.  Beloved sister and best friend of  Victoria V. Sullivan; devoted best friend and life partner of Ed Gutridge and his daughter, Vicky;  devoted aunt and Godmother of Casey McLellan, her husband Shaun and her sons Terrence (TJ) and Ryan; also survived by many loving family members and friends.

Kendra will be remembered for her larger than life persona, her positivity, happiness, generosity, love of quilting, animals, travel, scuba diving and all things related to the sea. She committed to the cause of organ donation, serving as Chairman of the Board Of the Washington Area Transplant Community for many years and creating beautiful shawls for their Comfort Shawl Program. Her career in health care administration spanned over four decades and included Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital, the Veterans Administration and, most recently, the US Military HIV Research Program.  But her true gift was her humor, loyalty and devotion to her family and friends, particularly to her great nephews TJ and Ryan. She was our anchor and our rock.

A DC native, died on Sunday, June 30, 2019 of High Point, NC, formerly of Silver Spring, MD. He leaves his wife of 59 years, Barbara Jean; four children: Bernard Joseph Jr. (Meredith), Marianne Noone, Jennifer Jorgenson (Todd), James Frederick; a sister, Jane Strauss (Charles); and four grandchildren, Brenna, Thomas, William and Caroline. He was educated at St. Ann’s School, St. Anselm’s Priory School, and Georgetown University’s College and Medical School, all in DC. He spent many years on St. Anselm’s School Advisory Board and Finance Committee. He trained in Radiology at the University of Chicago and Johns Hopkins University. He served on the faculty of the Georgetown University Medical School Radiology Department and spent 36 years at Providence Hospital in DC,where he founded Metropolitan Radiology Associates Chartered and was Chairman of the Radiology Department for many years. He also served a term as President of the Medical and Dental Staff there and was a long-time member of the D.C. Medical Sociely and the American College of Radiology. After retirement he spent six years on the Providence Health Foundation Board. He was a 48 year member of the St. Andrew Apostle Catholic Parish, in Silver Spring, MD, where he spent many years on the Parish Council, including a term as Chairman, and on the Parish Finance Committee. He was a Lector and Eucharistic Minister there. He was a Fourth Degree Knight of Columbus, a Knight of Malta, a Knight of the Holy Sepulchre, and a member of the John Carroll Society for over forty years. He spent his last years in Pennybyrn at Maryfield, a Catholic-sponsored retirement community in High Point, NC. The Family will receive friends at St. Andrew Apostle Catholic Church, 11600 Kemp Mill Rd., Silver Spring, MD on Monday, July 8, 2019 from 10 a.m. until time of Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

OLSON, Donald William

DONALD WILLIAM OLSON (Age 73)

On Wednesday, June 26, 2019, Donald William Olson, loving husband, father of seven and grandfather of ten, passed away at the age of 73.

Don was born on April 23, 1946 in East Chicago, Indiana to Donald and Stella Olson.  On February 6, 1965, he married his high school sweetheart Linda Jean Riggs.  They raised five daughters (Judith, Donna (deceased), Jennifer, Joanna and Jessica) and two sons (Donald Jr. and David).

Don attended Montgomery Blair High School in Silver Spring, Maryland (class of 1964) and went on to spend four decades in the wholesale beverage/alcohol distribution industry. Watching his children and grandchildren compete in sports brought him immense joy.  He spent several years as a football coach for the Silver Spring Boys & Girls Club and later at St. John’s College High School.

When he wasn’t spectating or coaching, Don enjoyed filling his weekends with family time, bass fishing, hunting and golf.

Don is survived by his wife, Linda, their six children and ten grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, the Olson family requests donations made in Don’s memory be directed to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, DC.
