CRIST, Wayne Edward

Wayne Edward Crist

February 4. 1952 – April 24, 2019

Born in Luray, Virginia, he came to Washington, DC in the early 1970s, eventually taking a position at the Library of Congress Copyright Office from which he retired thirty years later. In the late 1970s he met Jim McKenney, and they began a life together which lasted forty wonderful, joyous years. They were married in 2015.

In addition to his husband Jim, he is survived by his mother, Anna Elizabeth Garber Crist, age 101, his brother Ronald and sister-in-law Gloria, aunt Mary Jennings, sister-in-law Maxine Kent, brother-in-law Robert Kent, and numerous friends and relatives. He will be given a green burial in the family plot at the Oak Lawn Cemetery in Bridgewater, Virginia, on Tuesday, May 7, 2019 at 11 a.m.

Tradition counsels us not to speak ill of the dead. But those who knew him well and loved him will say this: in dying, he broke our hearts.

VARGHESE, Pathrose T.

Pathrose T. Varghese

Mr. Pathrose T. Varghese, age 74, affectionately nicknamed Kunjumon by his friends and family, was born on August 3, 1944. He was the eldest of six siblings, five brothers, and one sister. Upon completion of his degree, he joined the Indian Air Force to serve his country. He married Leela (nee Mathew on October 31, 1971).

Mr. Varghese came to the United States in May of 1976 with his wife, Leela, and his eldest daughter Sini, settling down in Silver Spring, Maryland. His daughter, Sylvie, was born soon after. Over the next decade, he, along with his wife, helped to settle their brothers and sisters and their families in this country.

He was a man of strong faith, and a key figure in the building of the current St. Thomas Indian Orthodox Church. He was one of the original founding members of the church and served on the altar for over 30 years. He retired from the workforce in 2013 after 40 years of service at Baxter International. Mr. Varghese valued spending time with his family and friends. He often hosted events at his house, bringing together family, as well as old and new friends. Mr. Varghese was always ready to play a card game and he enjoyed feeding anyone who walked through his door with his delicious food.

Mr. Varghese passed away peacefully on April 30, 2019 surrounded by family and loved ones. He is survived by his wife, Leela, daughters, Sini Cairns and Sylvia Sarin, son-in-laws, Jim Cairns and Varun Sarin, and his two grandsons, Jai and Avishay, who were the apples of his eyes. He is also survived by his siblings, Paulose, Mathai, Abraham, Chinamma, and Johny, along with many family and friends. He was an amazing son, brother, husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He was a true leader and mentor for all.
