Passed away on Thursday, February 7, 2019, of Bethesda, MD. Beloved wife of Joseph Patrick Fincutter; mother of Christina Fincutter, Joseph W. (Bernadette) Fincutter, and Joan W. Fincutter. Also survived by grandchildren: Christopher M. Fincutter, Eileen C. Fincutter, Jo-Ann M. Fincutter, and Gabrielle P. Fincutter. Memorial Mass will be held at St. Jane Frances de Chantal Church, 9601 Old Georgetown Road, Bethesda, MD on Thursday, February 21, 2019 at 10:45 a.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Judith E. Glassie (Age 73)

On Sunday, February 10, 2019, of Silver Spring, MD.  Beloved daughter of the late John Philip and Mabel Corinne Crispell; wife of the late W. Randall Glassie; sister of Corinne Behen (Williamsburg, VA), Tom Crispell (Hampton, VA), Andy Crispell and Susan Juchem (Milan, NY) John and Holly Crispell (Bakersfield, VT); aunt of Barbara Behen and John Brown, Kyle Behen and Alex Espinoza, Johnny and Lauren Crispell, Sarah Crispell, Lauren Desrosiers Crispell, and Evan Desrosiers Crispell, and great-aunt of Gideon Brown. Judy is also survived by many close friends and associates.
Judy was always thinking of others and remembered friends and family with souvenirs whenever she traveled. She enjoyed her recent trip to Scotland. An avid dog-lover, she doted on her family of Yorkshire Terriers.
Judy was proud to have earned her BA in Business Management from the University of Phoenix. She worked as a Real Estate Property Manager for Grady Management, Inc. for many years.
A gathering in remembrance of Judy Glassie will be held at Georgia West Apartments, 8708 1st Avenue, Silver Spring, MD, 20910 on Friday, March 8, 2019 between 12:00 – 3:00 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to the ASPCA or Montgomery Hospice.

JOHNSON, Virginia Woodruff

Virginia Woodruff Johnson (nee Virginia Southard Ott)

Virginia Woodruff Johnson, 85, born June 17, 1933, of Washington, D.C. died February 9, 2019. She was the daughter of the late Col. Chester W. Ott and Virginia Raymond Ott, and counted William the Conqueror, Lady Jane Grey, and several of the Mayflower voyagers among her ancestors. Ginny lived in many states and Panama as an Army child descended from a long line of West Pointers.  Most recently she lived in Washington, D.C., at the Knollwood Military Retirement Community.

A graduate of Vassar College, she taught English at the Masters School in Dobbs Ferry, NY and French at Martin, SD High School. She worked as an editorial assistant at the Episcopal Church headquarters in New York City. In later years she was public relations director for hospitals in North and South Dakota and Massachusetts. Her most significant work was the raising of her six children who survive her: Katharine R. (Mike) Boyce of Little Rock, AR; Christopher V. (Myaing) Plowe, M.D. of Durham, NC; Sarah P. (Paul) Erickson of Rapid City, SD; Elizabeth P. (Michael) Ross of Nashville, TN; Jonathan G. (Dana) Plowe of West Nyack, NY; and Mary W. P. (Adrian) Williams of Burlington, VT. She is survived by eleven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, her brother, Col. John S. Ott of Portland, OR, sister Elizabeth O. Mayo of Wilbraham, MA, and by her dear friend Maj. Donald Kaufmann of Washington, DC.

Virginia was the loving wife of the late Kenneth E. Johnson, a science teacher and school superintendent. She was previously married to and raised her six children with the late Rev. Gordon R. Plowe, a farmer and Episcopal priest.

A memorial service will be held on February 15 at the Knollwood Military Retirement Community.  Memorial gifts may be made to Cornell University, to the Army Distaff Foundation or to an Episcopal church of your choice.

Brown; father-in-law of Lawrence J. Prograis, Jr.; and brother of Belva Jean Griffin and the late Laura Mae Smith (Vancouver, Washington). AUER, Arthur Ernest

ARTHUR ERNEST AUER (Age 88)

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Arthur Ernest Auer on February 9 at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, Maryland at age 88.  Art leaves his wife of 62 years, Lois (Konvicka) Auer; his daughter, Carol Auer and her husband Michael Green; and many close friends and relatives.

Art was born in Kingston, MA and grew up in New York City where he attended Stuyvesant High School. He graduated from Cornell University in 1954 with a degree in chemistry and agronomy. From 1955 to 1957 he served as a First Lieutenant in the USAF and was stationed at Randolph AFB in San Antonio, TX where he met Lois.

Lois and Art were married in 1956 in Runge, TX and they moved to New York City. In 1959 Art joined the US Food and Drug Administration, where he investigated the firm marketing thalidomide in the US. They moved to Maryland in 1965 when Art was transferred to the FDA offices in Washington D.C.  He worked on various drug and food safety issues until retiring in 1989.

Art and Lois enjoyed traveling in their retirement and loved to square dance with the Belair Square Cats. Art was a keen gardener and he volunteered for many years at the US National Arboretum and Smithsonian Museum. In 2015 he received an award for 25 years of service at the Smithsonian.

Art was predeceased by his parents Ernest and Adelaide, his brothers Walter, Alfred, and Erwin, his sister Evelyn Streaman, and his son Alan.

Visitation will be held at Church of the Resurrection at Riderwood Village, 3110 Gracefield Road, Silver Spring, MD 20904 on Saturday, February 16, from 10 to 11 a.m. with Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Interment Resurrection Cemetery on Monday, February 18 at 11 a.m.

QUINN, Sharon O’Callaghan

Sharon O’Callaghan Quinn
July 26, 1942 – February 4, 2019
On Monday, February 4, at Sibley Memorial Hospital surrounded by her adoring family, Sharon O’Callaghan Quinn passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with leukemia. Sharon was born in Southampton, New York, to Thomas Aloysius and Helen Crowther O’Callaghan. She was raised in Montclair, New Jersey, and attended Rosemont College and later American University to study art history. Sharon is survived by her devoted husband of 50 years, Arthur Lee Quinn; children Helen (David Crandall), Arthur Lee, Jr., Beth (Marcello Fregulia), Christopher, Brendan, and Mark (Stephanie Westbrook); and five grandchildren, Andrew, Maica, Cassius, Sofia, and Isabella. She is also survived by her five siblings, Sheila, Patricia, Michael, Thomas, and Christopher.
In addition to being a full-time mother, Sharon pursued her passion for art as a docent at the National Gallery of Art, leading tours with enthusiasm, patience, and kindness for more than 20 years. She also worked for 25 years, most recently for 10 years as an administrative assistant at the International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group. Perhaps best known for her love of reading, Sharon was always in the middle of at least one good book.
Sharon’s life will be celebrated at a funeral mass at Our Lady of Mercy in Potomac at noon on Saturday, February 23. Internment Arlington National Cemetery at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Catholic Charities-Archdiocese of Washington (catholiccharitiesdc.org).

WHITTEMORE, Bette Ann

Bette Ann Whittemore (Age 84)
Surrounded by her children, Bette passed away peacefully the evening of Tuesday, February 5, 2019, in Silver Spring, MD. The beloved daughter of Ralph and Mary Krause, she is survived by her sister, Mary Jane Rota and her husband Jim of Richmond, VA, and her brother, Ralph Krause, Jr. and his wife Marlene of The Villages, FL. As for her children, she is survived by her daughter, Barbara Jones and her companion Mark Martinak, her sons Ken Whittemore Jr. and his wife Gerolyn, Bobby Whittemore, and Larry Whittemore and his wife Rene. She is also survived by her grandchildren Stefanie and Shawn McGrath, Leanne Whittemore and her fiancé Brian Ferguson, Victoria Whittemore, Jeremy Whittemore and his wife Anh, and Candace Hernandez and her husband Rafael. Great-grandchildren include Natalee, Braden, Jacob and Hunter Sprecher and Alex Whittemore. She also leaves behind many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Bette worked early in her adulthood for the Army Map Service and later in life for Arbitron Inc. Family and home were the focuses of her life, however. She lived in Beltsville, MD the last fifty years, where she enjoyed gardening, game shows on television, and visiting with family and friends. She also was a lifelong, avid reader of the Washington Post.
Family will receive those wishing to pay their respects the evening of Friday, February 15, at Francis J. Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD from 7 to 9 p.m. Her funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. the following morning at Collins Funeral Home, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD. A reception will be held after the service at a local restaurant.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations be made in Bette’s name to the American Heart Association.
