She had six brothers and one sister. She graduated from St. Teresa’s College in Winona, Minn., and received a master’s degree in library science Catholic University of America. It was in the library at CUA that she met her future husband, Thomas F. Troy, of Oakham, Mass. They married on Aug. 29, 1953. They and their children lived in Arlington, Leesburg, Hillsboro, and Fairfax, Va., and Rockville, Md,, before settling in Bethesda, Md., in 1972. Liz founded the school library at Holy Cross Parish School and was the librarian and a special education tutor for more than 25 years during which she passed along her love of children’s literature. After retirement she volunteered at Holy Cross in nocturnal adoration, on the pro-life committee, in religious education, and selling donuts in the social hall. Liz brought up her children with love and in devotion to the Catholic Church. She was an advocate for learning and reading, and preferred seeing children play games rather than watch television. She encouraged living simply, which included reusing things and recycling before it was popular. The family traveled often to visit relatives in Minnesota and Massachusetts, and were frequent visitors to museums, historic locations, and Harpers Ferry, W.Va. She was a volunteer and longtime board member of Centro Tepeyac Silver Spring Women’s Center, where she founded Family Night Bingo. During retirement, Liz and Tom’s home, which they shared with their eldest daughter, the late Mary Elizabeth Troy, was a place of family get-togethers, sing-alongs, the annual St. Patrick’s Day party, and spirited political conversations.
