MEERSMAN, Roger L.

ROGER L. MEERSMAN (Age 87)  

On Friday, June 15, 2018, of Silver Spring, MD originally from Moline, IL. Beloved husband of Delight Meersman; loving father of Matthew Meersman, Solange (Hank) Meetze, Deirdre (Scott) Gorton, Halcyon Meersman and Roberto Meersman. He is also survived by seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Roger’s second home was the University of Maryland where, in his 39 years at the University, he served as Professor, Director, Scholar, and Chair in the Department of Theatre, and retired as Professor Emeritus. Dr. Meersman received his AA from Blackhawk College, BA from Saint Ambrose College, MFA from Catholic University, MA and PHD from University of Illinois. In addition to his work at the University, he directed many productions throughout the Washington D.C. area, served on steering committees and boards, and mentored many in the Washington Theatre community. His writing credits include co-author of the book, Stage for a Nation. He also served as Theatre Critic for the Journal Newspapers for several years. In 2002, Dr. Meersman was honored with the Theatre Washington Helen Hayes Awards Governors Award for his life-long contribution to, and unwavering support of the theatre community. Two of his greatest loves were his family and his students who were an unending source of pride. DOLORES ANN DARRAGH

Dolores Ann Darragh, age 86, of Rockville, Maryland, passed away peacefully on Monday July 2, 2018, surrounded by loving family members. Dolores was the beloved wife of 63 years to the late Hugh McCarthy Darragh and mother of six children, sons Thomas Hugh Darragh (deceased 2015), David Bernard Darragh, Daniel Robert Darragh, Steven Anthony Darragh, Dennis Michael Darragh, and daughter Andrea Lynn Baker. Dolores is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 29 great-grandchildren. In addition to being a loving mother and wife, she loved to dote on all her “grand kids” regardless of age and was a great fan of the Washington, DC area sports teams. Dolores’ love for life and family was infectious to all who knew her, and she will be greatly missed. Mary B. Adkins (age 90)

On Tuesday July 3, 2018, Mary Bueche Adkins of Bethesda, MD. Mary Adkins was born in Salina, KS, and moved to Washington, DC, in 1946. She worked for the American Trailer Company, the Marriott Corporation, and retired in 1993 from the National Institutes of Health after 20 years of service.

While working for the American Trailer Company, she married John G. Adkins, Jr, and the two were happily married for 49 years. Her husband, John, predeceased her in 1997, as did her sister, Theresa Dix, and brothers Walter, Paul, Francis, and Bernard Bueche. Mrs. Adkins is survived by her daughter, Mary E. Turner, her son John G. Adkins, III, and grandson, Matthew Turner, as well as many nieces and nephews.

RETA MARIE SHADE
Passed away peacefully on June 30, 2018. She was 81 years old. Reta was born in Washington, DC on March 25, 1937. Reta’s greatest passion in life was her children. She is survived by her four wonderful children: Linda Gottlieb (Ron Gottlieb), Michael Feldman, Cindy Feldman and Patti Frye (Tony Frye). Reta was the adoring grandmother of 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. A lifelong animal enthusiast, Reta took great joy in her beloved cats and birds. A longtime resident of Rockville, Maryland, she loved her home and memories, which manifested itself into her love of antique furniture and collectibles, many of which were frames that housed pictures of her family from over the years. Her professional life centered around her interest in decor, as she held positions as a sales associate with Saah Furniture in Rockville and Hollace Clare in Olney. She will be remembered for the kindness she extended to all and the love she gave to her family. A graveside service will be held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD on Monday, July 9, at 1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Reta’s memory to the Animal Allies Rescue Foundation or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

It is with deep sadness and broken hearts that the family of Irene J. Downs announce her passage on Sunday July 1, 2018. Cherished wife and best friend of Gary for 30 years. Much loved mother of Kristin and her fiancé Dan Kessler. Beloved sister-in-law of Susan Reid and her husband Richard. Will be sadly missed by stepdaughter Kelly Bryant, nephew Scott Reid, niece Lindsay Glass, niece Christina LaCroix and nephew Frank Mazeika and their families. Loved by Halle and Oliver. Irene adored her family above all else and was a giving and loving woman. Gary and Irene loved to travel and one of her favorite places was Deep Creek Lake. Visitation with the family will be held at Francis J. Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring, MD on Saturday, July 7 from 12 Noon to 1 p.m., followed by a Memorial Service at 1 p.m. Cremation has taken place.
