PUSKAR, Viktor

 

VIKTOR PUSKAR

 

Viktor Puskar of Silver Spring, MD passed away on March 17, 2018. Prior to moving to Maryland in 2013,  he was a long time resident of New Jersey, living in Haddonfield, Piscataway, Bridgewater and Bernards Township.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years Thea; his sons Erik (Lia Mai), Arno and Hillar (Kirsten) and 6 grandchildren – Aili, Markus, Lili, Annika, Alina and Tia.

Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, on Saturday March 24 from 2:00 to 4:00. Burial will be at Kensico Cemetery in Valhalla NY on May 12.

Viktor was born on November 13, 1928 in Tartu, Estonia to Viktor and Hildegard Puskar.  He was pre-deceased by his brothers Felix and Ivar.

In 1944 the family fled to Germany ahead of the advancing Soviet army. After the war, they lived in the DP (Displaced Persons) camps. In the fall of 1949 Viktor began studies at the Clausthal Academy for Mining. He passed his exams before immigrating to the US, arriving in New York May of 1951 aboard the USS General Muir. That fall he started studies at Columbia University, graduating with a master’s degree in mining engineering in 1954.

Shortly after graduating, he was drafted into the Army with his basic training at Fort Dix.   He was in the Army for two years, serving 10 months in Korea patrolling the DMZ.  He became a US citizen in 1955.

After leaving the Army he worked in New York City.  Viktor was active in the Estonian community and belonged to the academic fraternity Rotalia. During the 1956 Hungarian uprising against the Soviets, the NY Estonian community organized a protest at the UN; here he met Thea Viilup and they were married in 1957.

Viktor worked as an research engineer for Block Iron, Englehard, ASARCO and  Georgia Kaolin until his retirement in 1992.  His areas of specialty were in fiber-reinforced cement and in the use of clay in the manufacture of paper. Over his career he was awarded five patents.

In retirement he traveled frequently and spent much time back in his beloved Estonia. He spent many months each year at his family’s farm Ülenurme and even grew and sold several crops of caraway, rapeseed and poppy seeds.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the “Kingitud Elu” cancer fund or to the rebuilding fund of the Tartu Maarja chuch which was the home church of the Puskar and Muna families.

Doris Rita Ingram Kogok, joined her Heavenly Father on March 12, 2018. Born June 17, 1919 in Akron, Ohio, to Eva Rois Ingram and Ira L. Ingram, Sr. Predeceased by her second husband, Tony T. Kogok.  She leaves a large loving and devoted family to mourn, including sons; John G. (Jack & Dee Dee) Adams, William J. (Bill & Vickie) Adams, Joseph A. (Joe & Nancy) Kogok and beloved daughter Kathleen M. (Kathy) Kaplowitz. Eight grandchildren; John, Billy, Amelia, Donna, Darlene, Jennifer, Deborah and David. Eleven great-grandchildren; Daniel, Tristen, Evan, Jessica, Tommy, Devin, Caden, Trevor, Nicky, Dylan and Anthony, two great-great grandchildren, Jade and Emry , a niece Judy Ingram, a compassionate friend Tina Stahlcup and her care family at Parry Home. As a teenager, Doris’ family settled in Silver Spring, MD. She remained a resident until her death. She was among the first graduating classes of Montgomery Blair High School, in 1937. She was a “Telephone Operator” for the then C&P Telephone Co., before becoming a stay-at-home mother. Doris began her walk with Jesus at Hope Christian Church and later Immanuel’s Church. She spent countless hours as a volunteer with Meals- On- Wheels, as a driver for the housebound who needed to get to the doctor, and opened her home to Christian travelers. She leaves a testimony of faith, fellowship and service to all who knew her and knew of her. ‘This is the day the Lord has made’

OSTERNDORF, Mary

MARY VERNON MORGAN OSTERNDORF

Mary Vernon Morgan Osterndorf, 95, passed away of natural causes Feb. 20 at Walter Reed National Military Medical Hospital in Bethesda, MD. She was a long time Washingtonian.

Born in Belspring, VA, Mary graduated from Radford College in 1945. While in college, she taught high school science, biology, and chemistry, and worked as a Virginia Home Demonstration agent in Floyd and Montgomery Counties. She was later employed at a large milling company where she worked in the test kitchen and promoted their products on radio.

One of the first 100 women to attend Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, Mary received her MS in Foods and Nutrition in 1948 and became a registered dietitian nutritionist shortly after. She then served as university professor at Virginia Tech, and taught foods and nutrition. In 1955, she married Logan C. Osterndorf. After moving to the D.C. area in 1959, she taught at George Washington University, and later worked as a dietitian for an area nursing home.

Mary was a member of P.E.O., Chapter H, D.C., and served on the D.C. State Executive Board, 1975 – 1982. She was a member of St. Luke Lutheran Church in Silver Spring, and the West Hillandale Woman’s Club.

Mary was a charming elegant woman who personified the graciousness of Old Virginia. She will be sorely missed by her two surviving children, Dana S. Osterndorf of Silver Spring, and Dale M. Osterndorf of Roanoke, VA. She is preceded in death by her husband.

Mary will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery on (Change of Date April 26 at 3:00pm), with a memorial service scheduled at a later date.     PATRICIA ARLENE SULLIVAN (Age 84)

On Saturday, March 10, 2018, of Silver Spring, MD formerly of Potomac, MD. Beloved wife for 65 years of Thiel Sullivan; loving mother of Kevin (Linda) Sullivan, Tim (Ellie) Sullivan, Mike Sullivan, Mark (Julie) Sullivan and Maureen (Rumnea) Kelly. Also survived by 11 grandchildren. Pat was born and raised in Los Angeles, CA. She excelled at swimming, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and individual and group singing in high school and college. Pat attended the University of Southern California and was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was presented to Society at the National Charity League Los Angeles League founder chapter Coronet Ball. Pat was a lifelong philanthropist including being a Committee member of the Kappa Gamma Decorator Show House held at the Balboa Bay Club, Newport, CA; the Omaha Orchestra Decorator Show House; and the Washington National Symphony Show House. She volunteered at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital (SGAH) for over thirty years, where she started the volunteers Women’s Auxiliary and was its Board president for many years. Pat was recognized as the Volunteer of the Year by SGAH, Outstanding Volunteer by the Montgomery County Council and the Governor of Maryland. She was also awarded, along with her husband, the SGAH Lifetime Giving Award. Pat sang in the St. Raphael Catholic Church choir for twenty years, was a member of the Potomac Women’s Club, and volunteered at the Rockville Nursing Home and the many schools attended by her children. She was a member of the Board of Directors of the Potomac Swim Club and President of the Washington Kappa Kappa Gamma DC Alumni Association. Pat was a member of the Springs Club in Rancho Mirage, CA where she enjoyed playing tennis. At Riderwood Village, she was a member of Grace Notes Women’s Chorus, and assisted in the weekly sing-along at the Arbor Ridge Nursing Facility.
