WIEST-COOPER, Darla R.

Darla R. Wiest-Cooper (AGE 62)
Of Kensington, MD, died Monday, March 28, 2016. Darla was born on June 22, 1953 in Harrisburg PA, daughter of the late Arthur R. Wiest and Shirley Stiely Wiest, and was the wife of the late Steven A. Cooper of Marlow England. Surviving are two brothers, Douglas A. Wiest of Madison Wisconsin and Roger C. Wiest of Springfield VA, and many longtime friends around the world. Darla lived a career in academia; after graduating Penn State University she worked for Boston College in Boston and headed their international programs department in London for many years before returning to the states at the Law Registrar of American University. She was a sophisticated, cosmopolitan lady of the world who spent many years living in England and was at home in two continents. She loved cooking, cats, current and international affairs, music, fine things and European culture. A memorial service will be held at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD on Monday, April 11 at 1 p.m. Interment private.

Born on March 5, 2016 at Holy Cross Hospital, Silver Spring, MD.  Passed away on March 29, 2016, at Childrens National Medical Center, Washigton, DC.  Beloved daughter of Patricio Luengas Lopez and Johanna Elizabeth Ponce Torres; sister of Genesis Betsabe Luengas Ponce;  granddaughter of  Reyna Lopez Ramos and Maria Nelly Torres.  Also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins.  Relatives and friends may call at  Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, Saturday, April 2 from 2 to 4 p.m., where a Funeral Service will be held on Sunday, April 3 at 10 a.m.  Interment George Washington Cemetery.

PATE, John Edwin

John Edwin Pate
Of Frederick, MD (formerly of Silver Spring) died March 29, 2016 at the age of 92. Born in Trio, SC on August 14, 1923 he spent his childhood years in Greenville, SC and went on to attend Furman University. He entered the US Army at the age of 19 and served during WWII. At the end of the war John moved to Washington DC where he met and eventually married Mary Ann Sharpe April 26, 1947. He proudly served and eventually retired from the U. S. Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel. John also worked and retired from the Veterans Administration with a combined 38 years of service. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Mary, his father Edwin Marion, mother Gertrude Melvina Williamson, his sister Olive Louise Tuten, brother Marion Gertrude “Jim”. He is survived by his son Tim (Julia), daughter Judi Schmidt (Steve), son Dan (Anne), nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. As a devoted convert to Catholicism, John was active and supported many Washington Diocese parishes to include St. Joseph”s, Our Lady of Grace, St Catherine Laboure, St. Andrews, and St. Rose of Lima. In addition to being an honorary life member of the Fr. Rosensteel Council, KofC where he held many committee posts. He was also an active member of the Cardinal O’Boyle Assembly of the 4th Degree. Viewing will be at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd West, Silver Spring, MD (Valet Parking) on Sunday April 3 from 2 to 4 p.m. Recitation of the Rosary will take place at 3 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial on Monday April 4 at St. Joseph on Carrollton Manor, 5843 Manor Woods Rd, Frederick, MD at 11 a.m. with viewing from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to the Mass. Interment with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery will be scheduled at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to the Tootsie Roll Program, Fr. Rosensteel Council #2169, 9707 Rosensteel Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20910, which assists organizations in our community that provide support and services to those who are intellectually and physically challenged.
