Rudy John Rote
On April 7, 2016, Rudy J. Rote, of Rockville, MD, passed away peacefully at home with his family at his side after a year-long battle with glioblastoma brain cancer. He was 60, and the loving husband to Ann and beloved father of Ryan and Devin. He was the son of the late Frank and Elvina (Korbar) Rote. In addition to his wife and sons, he is survived by his brothers Frank (Diana) of Alta Loma, CA, and Ronald (Vicki) of Lancaster, PA, sister Gail (Greg Maley) of Alexandria, VA, Aunt Ann Mack of Streetsboro, OH, Aunt Josie and Uncle Sonny Catalano of North Collins, NY, mother-in-law Beatrice Gibson of Freehold, NJ, sister-in-law Jeanne (Danny) Pasquinucci, brother-in-laws Frank, Gregory (Barbara), Dennis (Dottie), and Kevin (Janine), and many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Rudy was born June 1, 1955 and grew up in Gowanda NY. He graduated with honors from Gowanda Central School and was awarded a New York State Regents Scholarship. Besides his high school academic achievements, he also was an outstanding athlete, received many athletic letters and was awarded the Walter C. Peters Trophy for outstanding sportsman upon graduation. In 1981, he graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a bachelor’s degree in communications. He met his wife at St. Bonaventure, and after graduation they moved to the Washington, D.C. area. They married in 1983 and have lived in the Rockville area for over 34 years.
Rudy’s love of sports led him to seek employment in the sports entertainment field. He was employed by Comcast SportsNet for more than 25 years. One of his employment memories was working for ABC Sports during the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid and witnessing the legendary “Miracle on Ice” hockey game between USA and Russia. He was an avid football and hockey fan especially enjoying the Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens and Buffalo Sabres games. Rudy also enjoyed being outdoors and hiked and biked as often as he could.
Family and friends will remember Rudy’s sense of humor, kind heart and caring nature. He loved life and people – he took the time to make everyone feel special. He enjoyed visiting his hometown and reminiscing with family, neighbors and childhood friends. Above all, he adored his wife and sons and enjoyed their adventures and accomplishments. We are so grateful for all of the laughter, good times, and memories Rudy gave us. We are proud of his valiant fight against cancer.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, April 10 from 2 – 4 PM and 7 – 9 PM at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd W, Silver Spring, MD 20901 (Valet Parking). A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 AM on Monday, April 11, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 4101 Norbeck Road, Rockville, MD 20853. Interment will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 13801 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, MD 20906.
