B.A., Chemistry – Princeton University, 1963; M.N.E., Nuclear Engineering – New York University School of Engineering and Applied Science, 1965; Comprehensive Certification, Emeritus – American Board of Health Physics, 1971; Health Physics Society Fellow; American Nuclear Society Honorary Lifetime Member; American Association for the Advancement of Science Member; Society for Science and the Public Member; International Nuclear Law Association Member

He was a brilliant man who loved his children and grandchildren a great deal. He was a lifelong scientist and lover of nature and animals, amateur entomologist, and purveyor of bad jokes. He was kind and generous, stubborn and intellectually gifted; he taught his children and grandchildren to think critically and find beauty in the everyday. He will be missed and remembered always.

On Monday, January 18, 2016, of Fort Washington, MD.  Beloved husband of Blanche Williams; father of Stephanie Williams and Howard Copeland Williams, Jr.; grandfather of Howard Copeland Williams, III and Jameson Martinez; also survived by godson Al Miller and a host of nieces and nephews.

Howard, a native of Quitman, GA, left Brooks County to pursue a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education from Georgia State University (Savannah State).  He was a World War II veteran in the U.S. Army and later received his masters and doctorate in agricultural economics from The Ohio State University. Howard was a professor at North Carolina A&T University and The Ohio State University. In 1961, he served as a visiting professor of economics at Nommensen University in Indonesia sponsored by the Ford Foundation – National Lutheran Council. In 1964, President Lyndon B. Johnson appointed him as a member of the National Agricultural Advisory Commission for a three-year term.  He moved to Washington, DC, in 1971 to work as agricultural economist at the U.S. Department of Agriculture where he served a two-year appointment as senior agricultural advisor in the Executive Office of the President for the Office of the Special Representative for Trade Negotiations.  He retired from the government in 1987 and pursued an interest in real estate.

Friends may call at Grace Lutheran Church, 10928 Indian Head Hwy, Fort Washington, MD, on Friday, January 29 from 10 to 11 a.m. where Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m.  Interment Quantico National Cemetery on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at 2 pm. Of Silver Spring, MD, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2016 at Bedford Court Assisted Living Center in Silver Spring, MD. Beloved wife of the late Doyle Dean Smith, Sr.; mother of the late Susan Gobel, Cheryl Altemose (Russ), Doyle Dean Smith, Jr. (Debbie), Pamela Whyel (Allen) and Scott Smith (Linda). Also survived by her two sisters, Jane Rajotte (Dick) and Patricia McQuin (Bob); 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Betty was born in Washington, DC on August 17, 1923, the daughter of the late John and Mary (Saxton) Stone. She was a graduate of Montgomery Blair High School, Class of 1942, and attended St. Michael”s Church in Silver Spring, MD. She was a founding member of the Silver Spring Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary and a life member of Chi Sigma Sorority. MILES, David Allen

DAVID ALLEN MILES
David Allen Miles, born December 4, 1943, died Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at Holy Cross Hospital near his home in Silver Spring, Maryland due to complications arising from Multiple Myeloma.
David was born in the State of New York, to Robert Miles and Muriel Carter, and shared his father”s birthday. He was a three-sport athlete in high school before serving as a medic with the Army. After moving to Washington, DC to work at the Vitro printing company in Bethesda, David married the love of his life, Carol Ann Miles with whom he remained a faithful, dedicated and loving husband to his last day.
He was the youngest of four boys and is survived by his brother Bill who lives in Atlanta, Georgia. His brothers Harold from West Virginia and Robert from Oregon are deceased.
The viewing will be from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. on Monday, January 18 at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd. West, Silver Spring, MD.
His interment will take place at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 19 at Parklawn Memorial Park, 12800 Veirs Mill Road, Rockville, MD.
Though Dave did not graduate from Northwood High School, he spent countless hours of time helping to plan reunions to support his wife’s Northwood class.

STEPHEN POOR (Age 65)
On Monday, January 11, 2016, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of Margaret (Maggie) McCann Poor; father of Matthew and Megan Poor; son of Raymond and the late Virginia Poor; brother of Donald Poor and his wife, Nan. Also survived by aunt, Jean Riddle, and her family. Stephen was a strong advocate for union organization and held several union positions over a 35 year career. More recently, he served as an Executive Board Member of the Service Employees International Union and later as Director of the Montgomery County School Employees Union. Stephen dedicated much of his recent career to developing a clear outline illustrating what he believed were more secure health and retirement benefits for all working people. He spoke and wrote eloquently on these subjects. Stephen had planned to devote more time to these causes, and also to find new ways to fight the destructive effects of income inequality.
