RAYMOND J. GUAY
Ray passed away April 7, 2014, devoted husband of the late Regina Hurley Guay. Born April 12, 1921 in Fall River, MA, son of Thomas and Elise. After graduating from Msgr. Prevost High School in Fall River in 1939, Ray served in the U.S. Army during WWII from 1942 to 1945 as an artillery sergeant. He graduated from Catholic University in 1951 with a degree in physics.
Ray started his post-war career as a project engineer with the Naval Ordinance Laboratory developing underwater ordinance guidance systems and later becoming a Deputy Director with the office responsible for the Subroc, Polaris and Trident guided missile programs. He retired in 1981 from the Navy’s Strategic Systems Project Office.
A member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, Ray served on the boards of Garrett Park Pool and Swim Team, Izaak Walton League, and Sea Colony in Bethany Beach, DE. Also an active member in the Knights of Columbus, Rock Creek Council, helped senior citizens prepare their tax returns, and a constant volunteer for a variety of community groups.
Survivors include sister, Patricia Turgeon; and children, Thomas A. Guay, Margaret M. Sullivan, Maryrita E. Dunlavey, Moira K. Abernethy, Regina A. Gretschel, Patricia C. Berry and J. Gary Guay. Also survived by 21 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home (valet parking), 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, Thursday 3 to 5 pm and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Holy Redeemer Church, Summit Ave. & Cable Dr., Kensington, MD, on Friday April 11 at 11 a.m. Interment Mt. Olivet Cemetery, Washington, DC. Memorial contributions may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor, 4200 Harewood Rd., NE, Washington, DC, 20017.
