BERNARD JOSEPH MOORE (Age 91)

On Tuesday, May 7, 2013, of Silver Spring, MD. Beloved husband of 65 years of Sarah Frances Moore; father of Brian (Sally) Moore and Bernice (Ray) Weise; grandfather of Kelly Moore Nowottnick, Colleen Eccles, Alexander Moore, and Paul Weise. He is predeceased by his parents, Alexander and Mary Moore, and his sister, Elizabeth Schnieder. Mr. Moore was a native of NYC. After graduating Sts. Peter and Paul School and James Monroe High School in the Bronx, he served in the 104th Infantry, the Timberwolf Division. Tech Sergeant Moore earned the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart with Cluster during combat in France and Holland. He lead three platoons during the Timberwolf’s continuous combat assault record (195 consecutive days) which culminated in the crossing of the Indie River into Germany. Honorable discharge was followed by the Cornell University School of Hotel Administration and 40 years with Hilton Hotels. Prior to retirement as the first manager of the Washington Hilton Towers, he spent 25 years at the Waldorf Astoria Towers. Throughout his career he was befriended by world leaders, dignitaries and celebrities alike. He was a member of the Holy Name Society; the Sons of St. Patrick; the American Legion; and the DAV. GERALDINE MARJORIE COVELL JOHNSON (Age 83)

On April 30, 2013, Silver Spring, MD. Survived by her husband of 60 years, Russell D Johnson, Jr., daughter Marilyn R. Johnson (Dave Bostrom), sons Russell D. Johnson III and Paul A. Johnson, grandchildren Cecilia, Danielle, Lily, Zoe, and Andrew, daughters-in-law Katrina Ulrich and Peggi Johnson, brother Roger W Covell, and nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by her parents, William and Edith Covell and son Alexander W Johnson.

Geraldine received a BS in physics and an MS in physiology from the University of Rochester. Her jobs included working as an editor at the Office of Biological Handbooks of the FASEB and as a biological data analyst at the National Biomedical Research Foundation.

A caring mother, she made sure that her children were well fed, studied hard and were involved in Sunday School, Scouts, and music. She and Russ gave their children a love of reading, sailing, and music, with family recorder and piano ensembles. She was careful about doctors’ visits and other health issues (no swimming for an hour after eating!). She was a quilter, seamstress, knitter and weaver. When the cotton macrame’ hammock wore out, she tied a new nylon one. She and Russ enjoyed square dancing and racing each other at crosswords.

Raised a Baptist, as an adult she attended Episcopal and Lutheran churches in Silver Spring and most recently became a member of the Sandy Spring Friends Meeting (Quaker).
