MORRIS, Alton Wilbert

ALTON WILBERT MORRIS

On Thursday, May 6, 2010, passed away peacefully. Born in Martinsville, VA to the late Hezikiah and Amanda Jones Morris and was a life-long resident of the DC area. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean War and was retired from the A.P.W.U. Health Benefits Plan. Music was a large part of his life and he was well-known in the local Gospel community. Beloved husband of 56 years of Willa M. Morris; devoted father of Alton Pavaughn (Jacqueline) Morris and the late Willette Morris McReynolds; brother of Jerome B. Morris, Sr. and Vivian T. Morris; brother-in-law of Ella and Lucille Morris and Sallie Morris Redd. Also survived by a host of nieces, nephews and extended family. Memorial and Musical Celebration will be held at a later date.

MAUD LEE WILSON SHIREY (Age 88)

On Monday, May 3, 2010, MAUD W. SHIREY of Silver Spring, MD. Born and raised in Cumberland, MD, she received a bachelor”s degree in English Literature from Western Maryland College in Westminster. Following graduation she worked in New York City as a radio engineer for Voice of America and the Armed Forces radio until the end of the war. In addition to raising and caring for her family, she served on the founding boards of Grace Episcopal Day School and Grace Episcopal Church”s Pennyworth Shop. She was a faithful worker at the Shop for 40 years, as well as a Sunday school teacher.

Maud was the beloved wife of the late Orville C. Shirey; mother of Michael C. (Grace), Catherine S. (Steve) Luette and the late O. Wilson (Susan) Shirey; grandmother of David M., Gerrod D. (Shannon) Shirey, Jennifer Shirey (Bennett) Adelman, Stephanie L. and Christopher J. Luette; and great-grandmother of Wilson N. Shirey. Memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 12621 Old Columbia Pike, Silver Spring on Tuesday, May 11, at 2 PM. Interment private. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross, 2020 East-West Hwy., Silver Spring, MD 20910 or to Japanese American Veterans Association, noted for the Major and Mrs. Orville C.
