JEAN McGOWAN (Age 87)

Jean McGowan of Hyattsville, MD, recently residing in Florence, SC, passed away Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at her son”s home. Her beloved husband, Robert E. McGowan, passed away September 7, 1963. She devoted her life to her six children: Richard J. of Florence, SC, Robert E. of Bowie, MD, Raymond L. of Dunkirk, MD, Mary King of College Park, MD, Jean Voso of Owings Mills, MD and Michael P. of Jacksonville, FL. The daughter of Polish immigrant parents, Felix and Caroline Chmiel, she grew up in Moosic, PA, a township outside Scranton, PA. She did survey work and waitressing to support her family after the death of her husband, and triumphed at keeping her home and family together. She was a lifelong Catholic and faithful member of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Along with her children and their spouses, she is survived by 19 grandchildren and one great-grandson. GEORGE E. TURNBULL, SR. (Age 88)

Of Adelphi, MD, died Tuesday, May 11, 2010. Born in Oil City, PA to George E. and F. Lottie Turnbull, he is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Patricia Smedley; his son George E. Turnbull, Jr., of Columbia, MD, his daughter Diane T. Dixon of Beltsville, MD; his son Barry C. Turnbull of Melrose, MA and was cherished by his grandchildren, Timothy and Tyler Turnbull and Michael, Adam and Heather Dixon. Serving in WWII in company A 56th Armored Infantry 12th Armored Division, he received two bronze stars and a purple heart. Graduating from Penn State University with a degree in Mechanical Engineering, he began his career with the Army Corps of Engineers working on the design of Buggs Island Dam and numerous river locks including those on Welland Canal, St. Lawrence Seaway, and Soo Locks in Sault STE. Marie, Michigan. He was later employed by the U. S. Postal Service in merchandising design. Graveside service and interment will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on June 1, 2010 at 9 a.m. Those wishing to attend are asked to assemble at the administration building at 8:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Disabled American Veterans of the American Heart Association.

Born in York, PA, Mr. Mutzabaugh served proudly during WW II in the Army Airway Communications Systems, European Theatre of Operations. He was a career federal employee, working for 41 years with the GAO, Washington, DC. Mr. Mutzabaugh was a life member of the American Legion and of Oakdale Emory United Methodist Church.
