John Gamble Womack, Jr.
John Gamble Womack, Jr., passed away December 11, 2019, from complications due to Alzheimer’s.
Born December 23, 1942, the first of two sons to John and Ardelia Womack, John grew up in Little Rock, Arkansas, attending Central High during desegregation in 1957 and graduating in 1960. John went on to attend Harvard on a General Motors scholarship and then law school at U Penn. Upon graduation, John worked in Camden, New Jersey, for a period of time before joining the federal government at the Department of Transportation, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (DOT/NHTSA) in 1969.
As Assistant Chief Counsel – and often Acting Chief Counsel – for NHTSA, he was instrumental in supporting legislation and drafting regulations addressing the design and use of child safety seats; seatbelt design, safety, and enforcement; highway speed limits; roll-over crash protection; jersey wall barriers; increasing the drinking age to 21; airbag development and implementation; and mandatory center-mounted brake lights on all passenger vehicles. During the late 1980s, John took a sabbatical from NHTSA to work for Senator Ed Markey, continuing and expanding his public service work in additional directions.
John was a vestry member, and Junior and Senior Warden, of St. Columba’s Episcopal Church multiple times, singing in their choir and volunteering with the Loaves and Fishes community at St. Stephen’s and the Incarnation, earning the 1989 Lay Person of the Year Award. After retiring and moving to Pawleys Island, South Carolina, John volunteered at Habitat for Humanity of Georgetown County, became a member of the Midway Fire Rescue as a volunteer ambulance driver, and served as Junior Warden at Holy Cross Faith Memorial Church.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Susan Womack; his brother, Dr. James P. Womack (Anne Copeland), of Boston, Massachusetts; three children – Kristi Lowe (Casey) of Alexandria, Virginia; Jay Womack (Lyn) of Silver Spring, Maryland; and Allie Hoover (Josh) of West Bloomfield, Michigan; and five grandchildren.
