VICTOR DEKALB HICKMAN (Age 90)
Hyattsville, Maryland— Victor DeKalb Hickman, 90, died peacefully on December 8, 2019.
He was the son of Victor DeKalb Hickman and Mary Hinwood Hickman, and is survived by his brother Joseph Thomas Hickman, sister-in-law Carolyn Hessong Hickman, many beloved nieces, grandnieces, nephews, grandnephews, cousins and friends including Elizabeth Walker. Mr. Hickman was preceded in death by his wife of four decades Darlene Wesley Hickman, sister Bernice Hickman Rupprecht and sister Mary Louise Hickman Jones.
Mr. Hickman was born and raised in the Petworth neighborhood of NorthWest Washington DC, and a lifelong member of Lutheran Church of the Reformation, Washington DC. After graduating from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1948, Mr. Hickman attended and graduated from Strayer Business School.
In his early years, Mr. Hickman worked in the family business at Hickman Poultry Company and also owned and operated a luncheon counter at Petworth Pharmacy. Mr. Hickman was retired from his career as a neighborhood development planner for Greenhorne & O’Mara Inc.
Mr. Hickman and his wife were avid Redskin fans and held season tickets beginning with Griffith Stadium through many years at FedEx Field. He had a passion for animals and was a longtime member of the Washington Human Society. He and his wife Darlene, often adopted stray neighborhood cats, taking care of them and giving them a loving home. Mr. Hickman was a fifth generation Washingtonian. He also enjoyed camaraderie with his friends as a member of The Association of the Oldest Inhabitants of Washington DC (AOI) and The Concord Club. He held season tickets for the Arena Stage which he enjoyed attending with friends and also volunteered for many years at the National Lutheran Home.
A viewing will be held December 12, 2019 from 2-4 pm and 7-9 pm at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Blvd, West, Silver Spring, MD 20901. Memorial service will take place on December 13, 2019 at 10 am at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation located on 212 East Capitol Street N.E., Washington, DC. Following the service, burial and graveside ceremony will be held 2 pm at Lovettsville Union Cemetery– 12942 Lutheran Church Rd, Lovettsville, VA 20180. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Lutheran Church of the Reformation or Montgomery Hospice. Flowers are also welcome.
