William Barton died peacefully at his home in Silver Spring, MD on Saturday, March 9, 2019. He joined his beloved wife, the late Elizabeth Anne Barton.
Bill was known for his kindness, simple goodness and wonderfully dry sense of humor. He was a decent good man his entire life, always smiling and eager to help others. He was the spouse, father and grandfather everyone would have loved to have had.
Bill was born and raised in upstate New York. From September 1942 until February 1946, he served in World War II in the 15th Calvary (Army), rising to the rank of staff sergeant. After the war, he completed a Bachelor of Arts in Government degree from George Washington University (Nov 1948). He met his wife, Betty Anne, at work in 1953. They were engaged August 1954 and married on October 22, 1954 at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Arlington VA.
Bill and Betty were blessed with 62 years of marriage in which they raised their family, enjoyed time with wonderful neighbors and friends and yearly vacations to the beautiful state of Maine and other parts of New England. In retirement, Bill and Betty enjoyed playing golf, bridge and being wonderful grandparents. Bill continued to serve others as a volunteer at his church, the Smithsonian and offering tax preparation assistance.
He is survived by his three children Paul Barton (Cathy), Susan Burket (Thomas) and Joan Gambogi (Robert); six grandchildren Michelle Whicher (Ryan), Allison Burket, Jonathan Burket, Craig Gambogi, Julia Gambogi and Leslie Barton; and one great-granddaughter Lucy Whicher.
