MICHAEL DUBOIS MANGUM
Michael DuBois Mangum was the second of two children born to Aaron Geder Mangum and Inez Mangum on September 14, 1948 in Washington, DC. Michael, Age 70, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 30, 2018.
Michael grew up in Green Valley, Virginia and then Norbeck, Maryland. He graduated from Sherwood High School in 1967. Inspired by his father who was a Tuskegee airman, Michael began his military career and enlisted in the Airforce on April 1, 1969. He was a Vietnam veteran and served our country for 20 years rising to the rank of Technical Sergeant and working as an Aircraft Electrical Technician. During his time in the service, he travelled around the world, served as a gunner on the H53 helicopter, and had the honor of being assigned on the presidential unit to fly with President Nixon and Ford on Airforce One. After his time in the military, Michael worked as a Correctional Officer at the Montgomery County Detention Center for 15 years. He later worked as a Security Guard at Damascus High School and Montgomery Blair High School.
When Michael was stationed in Maryland at Andrew’s Airforce Base In the mid 1980’s, he met his future wife, Yolanda Thompson. They married a few years later on June 18, 1988 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Their family grew to include one daughter in addition to Michael’s son.
In Michael’s free time, he loved attending airshows at Andrew’s Airforce Base with family and friends, flying helicopters, and telling stories about his time in the military (He was a wonderful storyteller!). He also loved a bit of friendly competition about the Airforce being better than the Marines. Michael was also a black belt in Karate and was always up to teach his self-defense techniques.
Those who knew Michael knew that he was very outgoing and enjoyed making new friends wherever he went; he was always the life of the party. He loved to dance and was always the first one on the dance floor- especially when the Electric Slide started playing! Mike was a sports car aficionado- his favorite car being his midnight blue Nissan Z. Some of Mike’s other hobbies included swimming, playing a game of tennis or golf, going to the shooting range, and taking pictures. Mike had his own photography business and took photos and videos for weddings as well as being the in-house family photographer for all family functions. He was passionate about helping others, whether it was helping a friend move or cutting a neighbor’s lawn, he was always willing to lend a helping hand.
Michael was preceded in death by Aaron Mangum and Inez Mangum and he is survived by his wife Yolanda Mangum, a daughter, Danielle Mangum, and a son, Michael Mangum Jr. He is also survived by two grandchildren Isaiah Bishop and Mika Mangum, a brother Leonardo Mangum, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
Although we all miss and love Mike greatly, this is not goodbye- We will see him again one day!
