DAVID S. CROYDER
Builder – Developer – Conservationist
David S. Croyder died peacefully on March 23, 2017 after a brief stay in the hospital. David Croyder was born in Summit, NJ on August 29, 1928. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Washington & Lee University in 1950 with a B.A. in Economics and History. He graduated Salutatorian from Harvard Business School in 1954. Between 1954-1964 he was Vice President and General Manager of Riverton, Lime and Stone Company in Front Royal, VA. Between 1964-1971 David was President of Croyder Irvin and Company, builder and developer in the Washington, DC area. American Cyanamid purchased Croyder Irvin in 1971. He was President of CIH Properties from 1974-1995, and Director from 1995-Present. He was Director of CI/Mitchell and Best Company from 1976-1991, and Director of Riverton Corporation/RIC from 1981-2002.
David was a conservationist and community leader in his summer home, Cragsmoor, NY, for many years. His leadership was critical in preserving two unique wild areas for the mountaintop, Bear Hill and Sam’s Point. One property he saved from development, the other from wind turbines. He is survived by his wife, Selina, a daughter, AnnAdele and two stepsons, Ebenezer and Christopher. He is also survived by his first wife, Elinore Brown and four daughters, Leslie, Amy, Hattie and Polly, and daughter-in-law Antoinette, and eight grandchildren. He is survived also by his sister, Mary Page Diehl. He joins his beloved son, David Wentworth who died in 2009, his brother Carl, and his parents Dorothy Grammer and Harry Croyder.
