WINTER, Helmut (Hank) Emil

 HELMUT  (HANK) EMIL WINTER

Helmut (Hank) Emil Winter passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on January 10, 2017 at the age of 89. Born January 25th, 1927 in Fulda, Germany, Hank was the son of Emilie and Erhard Winter. He resided in Silver Spring, MD with his wife of 53 years Gertrud Winter. Hank came to the United States in 1957 and proudly became an American citizen in 1963. Upon coming to America he first arrived in Philadelphia and then began working for Volkswagen in Roanoke, VA.  He then moved to Silver Spring and worked for Auto City in Silver Spring. The majority of Hank’s career was spent with Volkswagen of America Corporate and Porsche / Audi until his retirement in 1991. Hank met Gertrud in 1963 and they married in December of that same year. He was the proud father of Michael and Stephanie Winter.  He was the cherished grandfather of Robert and Thomas Winter (sons of Michael and Patti Winter) and his grand dog Scout.

An avid outdoorsman, Hank enjoyed boating, hunting, camping and especially being on the beach. Many family vacations were spent driving across country with a pop-up trailer in-tow. Hank was captivated by motors and had a great affinity for trains, planes, boats and automobiles. Ever the gentleman, Hank was known for treating everyone with sincere honesty and the utmost respect. He loved to showcase his impeccable style by getting dressed up for parties and always appreciated getting together with those he held dear. His kindness and integrity will be greatly missed.

Relatives and friends may pay their respects at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD (valet parking), on Monday, January 16th from 2 to 4pm and 7 to 9pm. Mass will be celebrated at St. John the Evangelist Church, 10103 Georgia Avenue, Silver Spring, MD on Tuesday, January 17th at 11 am. Interment will be held at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers donations are being accepted by the Izaak Walton League of America – Bethesda Chevy Chase Chapter, P.O. Box 542, Poolesville, MD 20837 – in Memory of Hank Winter.

PHILLIPS, Anne T.

ANNE T. PHILLIPS

Of Silver Spring, MD passed away January 5, 2017 at Montgomery General Hospital due to complications from pneumonia and an underlying neuromuscular disease called desminopathy. Born in Chicago, Illinois in 1946, she worked in the Office of the Vice President, Hubert Humphrey, from 1965 to 1968 as a legislative aide and graduated from George Washington University in 1968. She subsequently earned a law degree from Howard University School of Law in 1981, and a Masters of Library Science from University of Maryland in 1990. In the late 80s, she worked as a government contractor helping to develop patient advocacy and information services for the benefit of affected AIDS/HIV populations. In the 90s, she worked as a trademark examining attorney for the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Thereafter, until her retirement from federal service in 2003, she held various positions at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). While at NIH, she especially enjoyed working on behalf of Federal intramural scientists in technology transfer optimizing opportunities for successful collaborative research agreements and developing and commercializing breakthrough biomedical discoveries. In retirement, she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren, following politics, and seeking the latest research on her neuromuscular disease, which she documented at a website she created and maintained called “The Desminopathy Reporter.” She will be dearly missed by her two children, Jordan (Michele) Pulaski and Samantha (Mark) Siegelman; five grandchildren, Joshua, Sarah, Zachary, Emma, and Matthew; her sister Camilla (Barry) Schlegel; her brother, Todd Phillips; and her niece and nephew. Family and friends may call on Thursday, January 12 from 3 to 5 p.m. at Collins Funeral Home, Silver Spring, MD. A celebration of her life will be held at Our Lady of Grace Church in Silver Spring, Maryland at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 13. Affectionately known as Yiayia Maria, passed away in her home Friday, January 6, 2017 in Washington, DC. Maria was preceded in death by her late husband of 56 years, Andreas Koutsothodoros; parents, John and Katherine; brother, Kosta; sisters, Vassilki and Harichlia; and son-in-law, Paul Tzamaras. Maria is survived by her six children, Kyparissia Tzamaras, Theodora Panagoulias, Katerina Arvanitis, Gus Koutsothodoros, Athena Miller, and John Koutsothodoros; sons-in-law Dimitrios Panagoulias, John Arvanitis, and John Miller; daughter-in-law, Daphne Koutsothodoros; 10 grandchildren George Tzamaras (Irene), Andrew Tzamaras (Phyllis), Eleny Katsoudas (George), Helen Nixon (Adam), Bill Panagoulias (Haiying), Demetri Arvanitis (Nina), Georgia Paxos (Mihali), Alexandra Miller, Casey and Kari Koutsothodoros; 13 great-grandchildren Athena, Demetra, Vangeli, Kysia, Paulina, Andrew, Donna, Theodora, Kostas, Minas, Katerina, Margot and Mathew; nephews George (Savoula) and Christos (Lambrini) Zourzoukis; and nieces, Katina Kalantzis and Vicki Zourzoukis. Henson; brother of Gerald (Genie) Henson, Buddy (Mary) Henson, Sharon (Mickey) Pitarra, and many loving extended relatives and friends. He was pre-deceased by his loving son, Donald and mother, Mabel Henson. Larry Henson served as a proud, dedicated member of the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, DC and retired as Sergeant after 23 1/2 years. Larry Henson enjoyed many seasons as a Washington Redskin fan and was happy that the Washington Nationals brought baseball back to DC. Lilette is the beloved wife of the late Harrison B McCawley, Jr.; daughter of the late Demetrius and Claire Calothy; mother of Harrison B. (Rebecca) McCawley, III and Nicole (Timothy) Reidy; grandmother of Sarah Claire McCawley and Kristin Ann McCawley; and sister of Mireille (Alfredo) Stevani and the late Yvonne Habet.
