ELIZABETH ANN BAYNE CONNELLY
Elizabeth Ann Bayne Connelly, 82, formerly of Jamestown, RI died on November 8, 2016 after a long illness following a stroke in 2006. She was born on August 15, 1934 in San Francisco, CA to Robert Harrold Bayne, an officer in the U.S. Army Cavalry and Garnette Brown Bayne. She was a granddaughter of W. H. Brown, former mayor of Manassas, VA. During her childhood, Mrs. Connelly lived in the Philippines, Germany and Ecuador, and graduated from Penn Hall Junior College in Chambersburg, PA in 1952. That year she married Robert Bailey Connelly, a submariner in the U.S. Navy who predeceased her in 2010. Among other locations they were stationed in Honolulu, HI, Norfolk, VA, Groton, CT, Charleston, SC and Newport, RI where they retired. Mrs. Connelly was president of the Rhode Island chapter of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America, chairwoman of the Swinburne School in Newport, RI, and a founding member of the retail partnership, Newport Needleworks. She was a volunteer with the Navy Relief Society and president of the Virginia Beach chapter of the U.S. Navy’s Dolphin Scholarship Foundation. She was vice president of the Jamestown Historical Society, served on the Executive Committee and the Building and Publications Committees of the Newport Historical Society, and was active with Trinity Church, Newport RI where she was a volunteer with the Altar Guild. She leaves her beloved children Cathleen Connelly of Washington, D.C., Robert Bailey Connelly, Jr. of Arlington, VA and Thomas Bayne Connelly of Mansfield, MA and their spouses, two grandchildren, Matthew Gordon Connelly and Samson Bailey Connelly, and a brother, Robert H. Bayne, Jr. of New Canaan, CT. A Memorial Service will be held at Trinity Church, One Queen Anne Square, Newport, RI 02840 on Saturday, November 19 at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery on a later date.
