PIOLI, Martin B.

img_3296

Martin B. Pioli

Martin B. Pioli, born on February 20, 1962, entered unto his heavenly eternal resting place on September 5, 2016 after a long, courageous battle with numerous, debilitating health issues at Emory University Hospital, Atlanta, GA. He is survived by his mother and father, Roberta B. Pioli and Richard T. Pioli. Also surviving are his loving wife, Mary A. Pioli, and children Madeline, Kyle and Grace Pioli who reside in Macon, GA. He is also survived by his brother, Patrick C. Pioli (Lori); sister, Maryrose Pioli Adamek (Carl); and brother, David V. Pioli (Cheryl).

Born in Washington, D.C, he grew up in Bethesda, MD. He graduated from Walter Johnson High School in 1980, and spent several years as a white water raft guide on the Shenandoah River in West Virginia, where he met the love of his life, Mary.  He worked as the head security officer at Garfinckel’s Department Store, a very historic shopping venue in DC. When it closed, he had the great privilege of locking its door for the last time.

He and Mary were married in 1989 and raised their children in Charles Town, WV. He attended St. Bonaventure University in Allegany, NY and graduated in 1994 with a B.A in English with a minor in Education. He had a huge personality which attracted many, many friends. His kindness and loving nature created part of his magnetism, but his major attribute was his wickedly, incessant and intelligent sense of humor which constantly entertained masses of his associates, friends, family, and students. His biggest joy in life was his beautiful wife and amazing children.

He and his family relocated to Macon, GA where he held the position as Manager of Distribution Loss Prevention Operations at the Kohls Distribution Center for 12 years.  At the time of his death he was serving as the In-School Suspension Teacher at Howard Middle School in Macon, a position he enjoyed where he touched the lives of students most in need of guidance and support. Many of his students loved and respected him.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, September 17, at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church, 917 Montrose Road, Rockville, MD 20852. There will be a viewing at the Church from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening, September 16, followed by another viewing at 10:00 a.m., one hour before Mass at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, the 17th.  Burial will be private at Gate of Heaven Cemetery. A Memorial Service in Macon, GA is being planned and will be announced soon.

In lieu of flowers, send contributions, if you wish, to St. Bonaventure University, Allegany, NY, the Visiting Nurses Hospice Care Unit at Emory University, Atlanta, GA, or help support his family by donating to www.youcaring.com/MartinPioliFamilySupportFund[youcaring.com]

David Lee Tocknell

David Lee Tocknell of Wheaton, MD died at home on Tuesday, September 6, 2016. He was 64.

He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 42 years, Janet K. Tocknell, his children James (Megan), Shauna, Lori, and Katie (Brendon Pinkham), his grandchildren Charles Aston Tocknell II and Cordelia Ito Pinkham. He was anxiously awaiting the birth of his newest grandchild in December.

David was born in Washington, DC on March 5, 1952 to Lorina (Zenia) Walsh Tocknell and the late Charles Aston Tocknell. He was the third of 4 boys, Wayne (Judy), the late Mark, and Philip (Debbie). He grew up in Wheaton and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1970. That December he went to work for the phone company in DC and worked for them for 40 years. He installed and repaired phones in Anacostia, embassies, businesses, the National Zoo, government buildings, and cemeteries. He joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints when he was 21 and served in many callings throughout his years, his favorite being Scoutmaster.

He was a very jolly Santa with his very own beard and enjoyed playing the part for countless children and families for 28 years. David deeply loved his family, talking to people, babies, animals of all kinds, canoeing, scouting, road trips, John Wayne westerns, Lonesome Dove, going to yard sales, and homemade pies. He never met a stranger. He could sell snow in the middle of a blizzard. He believed that if you had more than half a tank of gas you weren’t lost, you were on an adventure.

A memorial service will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 500 Randolph Road, Silver Spring, MD, on Saturday, September 17, 2016 at 1pm. Memorial contributions may be made to NCAC Boy Scouts of America, 9190 Rockville Pike, Bethesda, MD  20814 with in Memory of David Tocknell/camperships in the memo line.

LANTZ, Jeanne Henderer

jeanne-on-trolley-carJEANNE HENDERER LANTZ

Jeanne Henderer Lantz, 86, died Friday Sept. 2, 2016 in the ICU of Holy Cross Hospital, surrounded by her closest loved ones. She will be missed by her husband Elmer Lee Lantz; daughter Deborah Lee Baugher and her husband Robert L. Baugher, Jr. and her grandchildren, Robert L. “Trey” Baugher, III and Lisa Lehman and her husband Shawn Mitchell; and many friends, relatives and neighbors.

Born June 26, 1930 and raised in DC, she was the only child of Edmond and Marguerite Henderer. She spent her early years in the Girl Scouts at the Tacoma Park Presbyterian Church, where she met her life-long friend Phyllis Livingston. As she grew up, she developed affections for crafting and all things mice, and what would become quite a talent for sewing in all its forms. Friends and relatives have likely enjoyed at least one of her creations over the years: knitted blankets, all kinds of clothing and doll clothing; Halloween costumes; cross-stitched designs on pillows, towels, clothes or hangings; painted plates; unique beaded jewelry and trees; as well as homemade candy, cakes and “Cathedral Windows.”

She graduated Coolidge High School in 1948 and embarked on a long and rewarding career in nursing. Her knowledge and expertise were a welcome addition to various ORs, hospitals and doctor’s offices along her path. She retired in 1996 from a successful stretch with Dr. Goldberg in Kensington, MD, leaving many friends with whom she maintained contact throughout the coming years.

Shortly after she graduated high school, she met her life’s love, Elmer Lantz, at a dancing class in Chevy Chase, MD. After about a year of courting they were married Feb 22, 1958 and enjoyed 58 exciting years together before her passing.

Jeanne frequently volunteered at the National Capitol Trolley Museum, helping maintain the beautiful gardens and becoming one of the first female operators qualified for revenue service. In between work and more extensively after retirement, Jeanne and Elmer enjoyed many vacations traveling the U.S. They experienced and photographed the national parks, quirky landmarks and all the interesting people they could on the way.

Later in life, Jeanne spent as much time as possible with her two grandchildren, and stayed active and social with distant family, friends and neighbors. At home she always kept a Dachsund and, at times, two or more pet mice.  Her many hobbies and collections kept her sharp and entertained in her twilight years. She served on committees and attended Northwood Presbyterian Church every Sunday until she succumbed to a heart attack due to complications of pneumonia in late August.

She will be remembered at a service in her honor Saturday September 17th at 11AM at Northwood Presbyterian Church, with private burial.
