Elizabeth Cassidy Gilday (Age 83)
Died peacefully on May 7, 2016, surrounded by children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Thomas Aquinas Gilday, and her eldest daughter Theresa. Elizabeth (Betty) was born in Bethesda, Maryland on March 14, 1933. She attended Blessed Sacrament grade school followed by Georgetown Visitation High School and Junior College. She worked as a medical secretary at Georgetown Hospital before marrying Tom in 1953 and raising eight children in Chevy Chase, Maryland. Elizabeth was a grateful member of Alcoholics Anonymous since 1970 and was a long-time member of Columbia Country Club and Holy Redeemer Parish. Elizabeth loved people, painting, golf, and Capon Springs! She was a deeply spiritual person who loved a good laugh. She was an inspiration, friend and mentor to many people.
Elizabeth is survived by seven children, Thomas A. Gilday, Jr. (Karen), Mark Gilday (Susie), Meg Gilday Greaney (Michael), Matthew Gilday (Genny), Ellen Gilday Witts (Garry), Maura Gilday (Heidi Hansan) and John Gilday (Emily). She leaves behind 22 beloved grandchildren, Catherine, Seton, Isabel, Thomas, Patrick, Bridget (Cory), Brendan, Erin, Matthew (Maria), Christine (Jeff), Maggie, Garrett, Steven, Andrew, Madeline, Luke, Colleen, Kendal, Daniel, Molly, Clare and Mark; and one great-granddaughter, Madison. She is also survived by her brother, Alan Cassidy of Easton, Maryland; her sister, Janet Casey of Kensington, Maryland; her sister-in-law, Esther Cassidy of Olney, Maryland, and her sister-in-law, Margaret Gilday of Albany, New York.
Relatives and friends may call at Collins Funeral Home, 500 University Boulevard West, Silver Spring, MD, (Valet Parking), Thursday, May 12, 2016, from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Shrine of the Most Blessed Sacrament, Western Ave. at Quesada St., N.W., Washington, D.C. 20015 on Friday, May 13, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. Interment at St. Peter’s Catholic Church Cemetery, Harpers Ferry, WV on Saturday May 14 at 12 p.m. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to The Ashley Scholarship Fund, Ashley Addiction Treatment 800 Tydings Lane, Havre de Grace, MD 21078, www.ashleytreatment.org.
