Allen Frederick Brown
Longtime Silver Spring resident Allen Frederick Brown died peacefully surrounded by family on Tuesday, December 1 after suffering a severe stroke.
He was born in 1947 to Frederick and Yolanda Brown. His mother’s family immigrated to the United States from Italy. As a child, he enjoyed a range of lifestyles: his family lived in the suburban town of Lock Haven, PA, spent summers playing baseball in the bucolic mountain village of Crosby, PA, and eventually moved briefly to Manhattan, NY. They settled in Silver Spring in the early 1960s, where his parents worked as educators in the Montgomery County Public School system and at the University of Maryland. Allen met his wife, Nona E. Brown, in the cafeteria while attending college at the University of Maryland. They enjoyed many dates at the ‘original Ledos’ in Adelphi. Allen and Nona have three children, Nathan, Bethany and Thaddeus Brown, who all reside in the DC Metropolitan area.
Allen achieved his JD from Catholic University in the early 1970s. He then owned the restaurant ‘Our Place’ on New Hampshire Avenue, before spending most of his professional career as a US Government employee for the Civil Aeronautics Board and then the Department of Transportation. He enjoyed 10 years of retirement.
Allen was an active member of the community. Highlights included coaching and running the softball league at Forest Knolls Elementary School, teaching Sunday School at St. Bernadette’s Church, serving as a cub scout den leader, and donating time and resources to local food banks with his children.
Allen was devoted to college wrestling, an interest he developed growing up in Pennsylvania. During retirement, Allen served as College Editor for Wrestling Report ww.wrestlingreport.com, founded by Bruce Closson). His most popular segments on the website were the college wrestler rankings that he maintained and his ‘Wrestler of the Week’ column. He spent seven years as an enthusiastic commentator and web broadcaster for matches at American University, tournaments hosted by the Eastern Wrestling League, and occasionally at the National Invitational Dual meets. He is well known by the national wrestling community as an avid blogger and wrestling historian. Allen is scheduled to be inducted into the Eastern Wrestling League Hall of Fame with Bruce Closson in March of 2016. He was beloved and respected by the college wrestling community.
Allen was most proud of his family, including his six grandchildren: Simon, Lawrence, Flynne, William, Benjamin, and Madeleine. He is also survived by his daughters-in-law Song Park and Emily Ellerbe, son-in-law Robert Yorke, and nephew Frederick Parker, and an extended family many of whom reside in the DC metropolitan area.
