KMETZ, Bernadine T.

BERNADINE T. KMETZ
Of Silver Spring, Md., and formerly of Nanticoke, Pa., died peacefully on Saturday, October 3, 2015 in hospice care at her home. Born on February 10, 1925 in Nanticoke, she was the eighth child of Patrick and Elizabeth Brown McMahon. She attended St. Francis Elementary School. After graduating from Nanticoke High School, Bernadine worked as a beautician in nearby Wilkes-Barre and then as a telephone operator for Bell Telephone in Nanticoke. She connected callers with each other first by asking “Number please.” Bernadine married James F. Kmetz, also of Nanticoke, on Sept. 1, 1951. Their daughter, Deborah, was born in 1953. Several years later, when James took a job with the United Mine Workers, the family moved to Wheaton, Md. They had three more children: Suzanne, James and John. They were one of the original families of St. Andrew Apostle Catholic Church in Silver Spring. For many years Bernadine devoted herself to homemaking and excelled at cooking, and especially at creating a place of warmth and simple beauty in the home. She also had a special talent for celebrating holidays and marking occasions. After raising four children, Bernadine started a new career in her fifties, working in the cafeteria at Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in Wheaton. She greatly enjoyed her 27 years with her kitchen co-workers and the time she spent sharing her kindness and sense of humor with hundreds of students and school staff. She retired in 2006 at age 81. She was preceded in death by her husband James, daughter Suzanne, three brothers, William, Daniel and Patrick and four sisters, Margaret, Helen, Elizabeth and Marie. Surviving are her children, Deborah E. Kmetz, Madison, Wi.; James F. Kmetz and his wife Melanie, Silver Spring, Md.; and John T. Kmetz and his wife Susan, Monrovia, Md. She is also survived by five grandchildren, John Thomas (J.T.), Robert, Colton, Suzanne, and James, and one great-grandchild, Thomas. There will be a Funeral Mass on Saturday, October 10 at 10 a.m. at St. Andrew Apostle Church in Silver Spring, preceded by a Visitation beginning at 9:40 a.m. in the church. Burial will be at St. Francis Cemetery in Nanticoke, Pa. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Little Sisters of the Poor, who care for the indigent elderly, 4200 Harewood Rd., NE, Washington, D.C. 20017 or to S.O.M.E. (So Others Might Eat), who help the homeless, 71 O St., NW, Washington, D.C. 20001

Warner, the late Robert E. Murphy, Jean M. Alison, John G. Murphy and the late Kathleen A. Murphy. Also survived by eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. GEORGE CALVIN MURPHY

George Calvin Murphy, known to all as “Murph”, was born in Uledi, near Uniontown, Pennsylvania on November 8, 1925, and passed away October 4, 2015 at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home, Maryland. He was the only child of George William Murphy and Martha Virginia Colvin Murphy, and was raised in Martinsburg, West Virginia. His father died when Murph was 13, and he supported his mother by a newspaper route and delivering groceries by bicycle. During his junior and senior years, he attended class in the morning and worked full time at the A&P Grocery. He graduated from Martinsburg High School, class of 1943. Murph was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army 254th Infantry Regiment – 63rd Infantry Division. He saw action at Hill 216, near Colmar, and was wounded February 1, 1945 during the Battle of Jebsheim in the Alsace region of north-east France. Murph was awarded the Purple Heart. His unit was recognized by two Presidential Citations for their role in helping to open the Rhine River Valley, leading to the defeat of Berlin. The 254th was also awarded the Croix de Guerre with Palm by the French government. After recovering from his war injuries, he managed several A&P grocery stores in Martinsburg, West Virginia, Hagerstown, Maryland and the Washington area. He went on to work at the Hotel Washington, where he was a manager for the better part of 40 years. It was there he met his wife of 33 years, Mary K. Powers of Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Together, they raised a family of nine children in Hyattsville, Maryland.Murph was known for his love of coaching basketball as a volunteer for Green Meadows Boys Club. His teams achieved a streak of undefeated seasons, at one point winning 50 games consecutively. Murph was a life-long Washington Redskins fan. He was also an avid follower of University of Maryland basketball and football.Murph was preceded in death by his daughter, Kathleen Ann (1978), wife Mary (1986) and son Robert Eugene (1990). He is survived by his children Michael William Murphy of Crofton, MD, Thomas Edward Murphy of Baltimore, MD, Mary Patricia Catena of New Carrollton, MD, Sharon Ann Seymour of Longs, SC, Sandra Kay Warner of Pawleys Island, SC, Jean Marie Alison of Pawleys Island, SC and John Gary Murphy of Derby, KS. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.The family wishes to express sincere gratitude to the staff at Charlotte Hall Veterans Home for their care of Murph during his final years of life.

Passed away on Saturday, September 26, 2015 of Coconut Creek, Florida. He is survived by Rachael Johnson, his dearly beloved wife of two years. He was a loving son of Paul and Linda Johnson and caring brother to Christopher Johnson. Joseph lived in the greater D.C. area for many years, graduating from Our Lady of Good Counsel High School in 1999 and then from Xavier University in Cincinnati in 2003. He relocated to Florida where he had a successful career in Fraud Investigations and Loss Prevention. He will always be remembered for his infectious smile, adventurous spirit, quick wit, playful nature, and kind and generous heart.
