ELIZABETH “Pat” KOVICH
Departed from this world on March 8, 2015 at 97 years old. She is survived by five daughters, 10 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. She was predeceased by her parents, Carl and Pearl Shaeffer, her husband of 67 years, George Kovich, and her grandson, Joshua Englehart. Pat (so nicknamed because she always wanted to be Irish) was born in Reading, Pennsylvania in 1917. She graduated from Kutztown State Teachers College, where she first met George. She went on to become a teacher and then joined the WAVES during World War II. During that time, she was reunited with George, who was now a Marine, and they married in 1944, both in uniform, in Baltimore, Maryland. Pat and George had five daughters,- Kate Bunnell (Bert), Kerry Englehart (Michael Lattino), Eileen Stone (Bob), Patricia Brown (Carroll), and Jessie MacKinnon (Bruce). During George’s military service, every three years, when George came home with his orders, Pat would pack them up to move to a new house, new schools, and new friends. She was always upbeat about these life changes and quickly made new friends in the community. When George retired, Pat worked in the County library, and became a devoted volunteer for Meals on Wheels, HELP of Silver Spring, and the Literacy Council of Montgomery County, where she met many new friends from all over the world teaching them English. Pat loved to sing and was known for spontaneously breaking into song. When she meets George again in the next life, she will, without a doubt, sing to him the Hawaiian Wedding Song. A Funeral Mass to celebrate Pat’s life will be held at Saint John the Baptist Catholic Church, 12319 New Hampshire Ave NE, Silver Spring, MD at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2015. A reception will immediately follow in the long-time residence of Pat and George. Private interment. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Montgomery Hospice.
