FIDEL, Edward A.

EDWARD ALLEN FIDEL (age 96)

On October 29, 2011, Edward Allen Fidel passed away at Manor Care Nursing Home in Chevy Chase, MD, where he had been a resident since 2006. Born in Grand Junction, CO on November 17, 1914 to Anthony George Fidel and Anne Bagley (Allen) Fidel, Mr. Fidel was a foreign service officer for nearly 30 years until his retirement in 1970. He attended the University of Colorado, and received a B.S. from School of Foreign Service, at Georgetown University in 1937. He married Frances Bean in 1939. He served as a federal agent with the U.S. Department of Interior, 1937-1941. From 1941-1970 he served with the U.S. Department of State, successively as a foreign service officer in Quito, Ecuador; as Third Secretary at the American Embassy in Paris; as Second Secretary, American Embassy in Rome; as Economic Advisor British Commonwealth and Northern European Affairs Division, Washington, 1941-57; First Secretary, American Embassy, Bern, Switzerland (1955-57); Counselor of Embassy for Economic Affairs (1957-59); Director, Executive Staff, Office of Assistant Secretary of State for Economic Affairs (1959-61). Senior Foreign Service Inspector (1961-63). U.S. Consul General, Trieste, Italy (1963-67). Board of Examiners, Washington, D.C. (1968-70). A year following his wife Frances’ death, he married Suzanne Chapman in 1982, who died in 1998. He is survived by his son, Edward Allen Fidel Jr. of Ft. Myers, FL; his stepson, Stephen R. Chapman and his wife Susan J. Kitsoulis of Washington, DC.; his niece, Barbara Fidel Adams and her husband James Adams of Concord, NC.; his nephew, Lawrence Fidel and his wife Katie of Montgomery, AL, and his stepdaughter Catherine C. Reynolds and her husband David Reynolds of Punta Gorda, FL. A memorial service is planned for friends and family on Saturday, November 19 at 11 a.m. at All Saints Episcopal Church, 3 Chevy Chase Circle, Washington, DC.
